Car road tax on a new car

Postby voyseygw » Thu Apr 01, 2021 7:02 am

Bought a new car a couple of weeks ago, looking at my bank account and the car tax has just been taken, but for the old car. Does this mean our new car is not road taxed? Going to Fuengirola today to specsavers from Granada province so may get stopped by police, so don’t want to be fined.

The person who pays the car tax for the year is the registered owner on Jan 1st irrespective of when you sold or exchanged the vehicle . Car tax is paid slightly in arears , runs from Jan 1st to Dec 31st and charged around start of second quarter .The car tax for the new vehicle will have been paid by the distributor who sold you the car when they registered it . Possibly your confusing Car Tax with Insurance but Car tax isn't transferred from one vehicle to another .

We sold our old car in the February but still needed to pay its road tax when it became due in May that year. The new car we had replaced it with then didn't need to be taxed until the following year, so we didn't pay it twice in one year. I'm presuming you are talking about a brand new car from a dealership?
