Driving Licence Exchange

Postby LanjaronBadger » Thu Sep 16, 2021 2:23 pm

I have lived i Spain now for just over two years. I am currently trying to exchange my UK licence to a Spain one, but on the official website there is no option to put in UK on the list of countries on the first page. Can anyone suggest why? Thanks

Because Spain no longer has an agreement with the UK for licence exchange. If you registered with DGT your intent to exchange before 1 Jan, you will be able to exchange. Otherwise, until a new agreement is made, you will have to apply for a Spanish licence and pass a driving test.

Holders of UK licences were given plenty of warning of this change.

Are you resident? someone my be along to disabuse me of this opinion but I was under the impression that you need to be a Spanish resident in order to obtain a Spanish licence !!

Did you register before 31 Dec 2020 with the DGT to change your licence? If so you have until 31 Dec 2021 to complete the exchange.

Otherwise you will have to take a test as El Cid says.

There's a page here that may help that is specifically for the UK:

I am not sure the OP is talking the same language. His opening post says he has "lived in Spain" then it changes to "resident" now in my opinion these are the same thing but neither implies "Residencia" as we know it and without which he has little chance.

I was sort-of presuming the OP did have residencia as otherwise the whole attempt of exchanging his/her licence is a waste of time, as you say Lyric.
