Taking cremation ashes to UK

Postby voyseygw » Sat Sep 18, 2021 12:54 pm

I am planning to take my daughter's ashes back to the UK in November. I brought them here to Spain in 2013 when we moved here. We travelled here by car.
I need to know exactly what I am required to do so that I can take them through Security at Malaga Airport and into London Stansted.
I have Her Death Certificate and cremation certificate (English)
The ashes are in a plastic screw top container as given to me by the Crematorium. It is not sealed.
Can anyone please tell me if they have doe this and how please?

I have no knowledge of this, but maybe try Citizens Advice ?

Mmm a difficult one this, the only advice I can offer is to first contact the British embassy closest to you they will probably know the rules also contact the airline with whom you are flying.

As a matter of interest when you first travelled to Spain by car did you declare your situation, I would check the rules for this also as it could be a potential problem, good luck with it !

I would ask the airline. I know of people who have travelled with ashes but that was a while ago and with the security checks nowadays, they may be more cautious.

Easyjet have this on their website:
You can take ashes with you in your cabin bag, as long as:

you have a copy of the death certificate
a copy of the cremation certificate and
the ashes are securely packaged in an appropriate container.
Please let security staff at the airport know that you’re carrying ashes when passing through the security area.

I would think that they would expect the death certificate and cremation certificate to be in Spanish.

It should probably be a lot less hassle to put them in the post!

The simple solution is buy a hold bag... no questions...
I actually think this item go through security but too high risk just in case...
Security only look for dangerous items... i have brought all kinda stuff through....
