heartworm jab for dogs

Postby princess peach » Sat Jul 05, 2008 10:10 pm

I have just had my puppy vaccinated against heartworm.
The price was 50.00 euros.
Just wondered how much everyone elses doggies jabs were.
It was only 130.00 euros for eye surgery,50 euros seemed steep compared to the price of the eye op :?

We give our dogs tablets, about €30 each for a six month supply.

Just had a look...3 stickers, one Vanguard* DA2Pi+L (Liquida), one Vanguard* DA2Pi+L (Liofilizada) and the Rabies one, Etadex. So, that is not for a heartworm jab, which may be more expensive? (I use Stronghold and Drontal). Mine is an elderly dog, not a pup.

phew...just googled it...here is what it said.
Guardian® SR is the first injectable endectocide based on moxidectin for the prevention and treatment of Dirofilaria immitis in dogs, also known as heartworms and to treat the infestations produced by larvae or adult stages of Ancylostomum caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala present at the moment of the dirofilariosis prevention. Its unique sustained release formulation allows one treatment to last for the whole heartworm season, as opposed to the other available products that require monthly oral administrations.

We are hoping to bring our dog with us next year and I am having to get him a pet passport later on in the year. I will have to ask my vet about heartworm. Are there any other things I should ask about?

microchipping or tattooing the dog,but then your vet should already be advising you of that..I cant think of anything else...maybe someone else can. :D

Costapacket
I would suggest asking a local vet in Spain.
They know what diseases are common in their area.
English vets might not know of diseases in Spain.

My new puppy is due her second lot of injections this week (the first being done by the breeder). I don't think the first one included Heartworm, but I hear its important - what do I ask for in Spanish? Is it just 'parasita de corazon' or some such???

50€ sounds outrageously high!!

well,i too thought the price was high, but when divided up into weeks it works out at 96 cents per week to protect her,and after losing one pup at xmas this year(not to heartworm),you just cant put any price on that.

Too true, Peach, but I do think vets take us for a ride sometimes - ours charges a fortune for frontline but I can buy it much cheaper on the internet even allowing for postage - tho don't ask me where, I bought a job lot ages ago and can't remember the name of the site!

However, nothing was as expensive as getting a piece of grass removed from my cats nose - I am not joking - biopsy's and micro keyhole surgery later revealed the cause of her breathing difficulties and the bill was astronomical. However, she was worth it and I didn't grudge a penny ( honest  )

Thanks for the translation Gerry - pretty obvious if I had thought about it!

geegee,i always buy my frontline from the local petshop.
Just one squibby thing in a sealed pack(sorry cant think of the right name)maybe vial?)
I think it was 8 euros for my 47 kilo bully.
and 6 euros for my puppy.
