the english or spanish way

Postby princess peach » Mon Jul 07, 2008 6:33 pm

O.k..
another question...Are you into the spanish times of eating?

I have been here for 5 years, and i still eat at english times..breakfast at 8.30am,dinner at 12.30 and tea at 5.30...
Do any of you eat at spanish times?
Or do you eat(like me)at english times still.
Do you have a siesta too?
Me no,as i dont sleep thru the night.

I am not sure what you would call English time as we have lunch at about 1pm and dinner at about 8pm. I think people in the UK differ quite a lot but in Spain they all pretty much eat at set times probably more to do with the working hours and the siesta.

Breakfast 9:30 am
Lunch 2:00PM
Dinner 8:00PM or later
Siesta sometimes on a Sunday

Don't know if these are Spanish times but it suits us.

In the summer we cook when it feels a little cooler, try not to have a siesta as I always feel like mush when I wake up, then cant sleep at night and keep getting up with nothing to do.

Breakfast - Anytime between 7:00am and 9:30am
Lunch - Not before 2:30PM
Dinner - 9:00PM or later (a little earlier in the winter)
Siesta - 3:30 to 5:00pm (only in the summer)

I can't really compare it with the UK as, due to our respective jobs, we ate when we had the opportunity and rarely together.

My eating times are the same as I observed back in the UK. Breakfast depending on what time I have to get up for work, lunch (on site or in car usually) between 1 and 2pm and dinner about 8pm. No siesta as we work on site right through til about 5pm.

Princess! What part of the UK did you come from? As someone else said, it varies so much. If you had "dinner" at 12.30 and "tea" at 5.30, you must come from the north!
I'm intending no offence - just curious at how a small country can be "divided" by such a simple thing as eating habits and nomenclature!

A most beautiful part of the world!

It's not the time - it's what you call it!

Darn Sarf we say "lunch" - don't have "tea", but go into "dinner" at about 7.30 ish.

But, to answer your original question, we kind of do the Spanish thing and, in all honesty, it was one of those things that attracted us to Spain in the first place!

Hey! Just looked at my watch. You must be eating "dinner" now as its 12-44. What is on your plate?

Breakfast 9.30 to 10.30, depending on what time I 'come to' in the morning
Lunch, winter 1pm, Summer 2pm or later
Dinner, winter 6 - 6.30pm (I get hungry as it gets dark and it's colder!), summer 7pm.

I cannot eat late (ie 8 or 9pm) as I just feel too full at bedtime and often wake up with heartburn  . I lived in France for over 2 years and never ever got used to their 12 o'clock lunch time. The restaurants, even those in the supermarkets, were shut by 2pm. I often wonder how French visitors get on here when everyone is still having their coffee and cake at 12, and likewise the Spanish in France when everything has shut by their lunchtime

By the way, I'm a southerner but my parents used to call lunch dinner, and dinner tea!

Yes,its a nice part of UK,but like everywhere else, rife with drugs,I lived in a little cobbled town called Richmond.Nice for old peoples coach trips..thats about as lively as it got....

Seems most of you are into the spanish way of eating then.My hubby has a very physical job and he finishes work at 4.30,comes in starving, thats maybe why i have never got out of the 5.00 to 5.30 teatime.

8pm to 8.30 ish for dinner (winter) about the same time as in the UK. Summer inbetween 9pm to 10pm.

Lunch is late too, unless we have skipped breakfast and will have a brunch about mid-day.

Some people who have stayed with us seem to want to eat at 7pm  My neighbours often eat dinner around 11pm!

If I have a menu del dia for lunch then I rarely need to eat in the evening, which is good for the waistline  .

You are one of the few who will own up to eating in one of those "Brit Bars" that despoil the Spanish Costa (in the down-market tattoo-and-face-furniture wearing parts, anyway)! You will be telling us next that you buy the Sun or the Daily Mirror every day, too!

Jenny seems to be located in Baza, wouldn't think there are Brit bars there :? Maybe she cooks her own.
