cleaning stainless steel

Postby tjtops » Mon Dec 01, 2008 10:12 pm

Does anyone know of anything available here to try and restore a badly-burned stainless steel saucepan? Guess who dozed off on a comfy sofa and forgot that a pan of veg peelings was slowly incinerating itself on the stove....  (I blame the chickens!)
I've managed to get all the actual black debris off but it's left a huge amount of discolouration.......help please!!!!

I usually find stewing fruit in it helps. Or soak for 24 hours in OxiClean. I am always doing this. One day I let eggs boil dry and hours later found them all splattered on my kitchen ceiling!!

tjTops, I forgot my Christmas pudding boiling a couple of years ago and burnt the saucepan well and truly black, i the end I soaked it in washing powder, washing up liquid and vanish, all mixed together- it came up better than ever  And the pudding was fine, luckily, it was my steamer saucepan. It was a bad year that year, I also used my electric steamer, kept re-filling the water- it objected as it was on continually for 6 hours- it never worked again after that!
How are your hens laying with this cold weather? Mine are very on/off got 9 older girls and 7 point of lay, which I think 3 just might be laying. Eggs ranging this week from 2 eggs to 6 eggs a day. I need a regular supply as 2 neighbours buy eggs from me, I go without so as not to let the neighbours down! Don´t the eggs taste wonderful? Far better than supermarket eggs.
As for moulting- daft birds decide to moult as winter is starting :? I´m thinking of making a cushion with all the feathers

Well......I'm sure it was kindly meant but I WOULDN'T recommend the bleach option...I did as instructed (having not noticed the earlier posts in reply to my question   ) and I have the most awful feeling it has removed part of the 'stainless' bit of the steel.....the bleach/water mixture turned brown then almost black...clever clogs me thought it was the 'muck' coming out....but now I see the damage it has done.....it wouldn't be so bad but it was an extremely 'good' saucepan which was given to me years ago and one of only 3 decent ones left!!! Anyway time will tell if it has done that!!! Now's the time I wish we had rhubarb here cos I remember that being a v good cleaner!!!....Would oranges work as well I wonder????
RE hens Olive, sorry to hear about yours but mine are laying like machine guns....5/5 per day for some weeks now...and they taste wonderful...MUCH better than when it was hot!!
I am intrigued tho cos they don't appear EVER to have moulted in the 6/7 months I've had them... ...
Mind you, all is far from rosy in the henhouse cos I bought 3 more POL a couple of weeks ago and despite my best efforts, the 'original' 5 just won't have any of it...even the stupid cockerel drives them off as well...does he not know fresh 'totty' when he sees it???

We've used 'Bar keepers Friend' powder, seems to move most stains, don't know if you can buy it in Spain, but I know it is usually available from ebay or amazon.
To keep stainless steel bright and shiny , I use a drop of WD 40 or a tiny drop of baby oil, buff up with a soft cloth.

Problem is there are so many differing grades and quality of stainless. We paid 350 uk pounds for a 1092mm splashback for the range and OH hated it from day one because it STAINED :?
We used everything on it to keep it clean including all the stainless cleaning products plus acetone, thinners etc. to no avail.

Eventually went to a specialist metalholders and had a piece of "aircraft quality" stainless cut to the same dimensions at under half the price of the branded one.................no comparison, you can clean the new one with a simple wet cloth no matter whats on it and it comes up like new.Should have done that in the first place with hindsight.

With your pan, to be honest I think you'll have to go to town on it with an abrasive to get the black off before polishing it back to a shine with a stainless cleaner.

Thanks DA...but the problem is, I'm scared that the coating is coming/has come off with a reaction to the bleach/water boiling exercise.....I'm currently trying the Adritt (oxi-foaming sorta stuff) to see if that does any good......but I'm afeared....terrible afeared.....
PS,not least because there's NO WAY I could replace this saucpan.....!!

Hiya, not quite understanding this right possibly (usual for me :D )
Do you mean your pan has a non stick/teflon coating? I thought you just meant it was all stainless.

 cant understand what happened to your pan..sorry
I always get the burnt pans to clean..using bleach in this way is very much used in Spain..and I myself have done so many times..are you sure the pan is stainless steel because I have seen this blackness happen with aluminium pans.

No DA, it's all stainless steel...but when I Googled this problem originally, a couple of sites came up with dire warnings about not allowing the 'stainless' coating to be eroded in which case it would revert to being just ordinary steel (ie not rustproof)....think it had to do with ammonia as well as NOT using steel wool/strong abrasives etc..... possibly.... my physics/chemistry is not what it oughtta be!!!

And yes, I've just put more oxi on and I'll leave it to see what occurs!!

DA we have a stainless steel splashback and have had the same problems. The only success we have had is to use the old-fashioned Ajax powder (gently) then finish with a cloth and a small amount of fairy. We do this with the oven too and a steel washbasin in the cloakroom. We buy all this modern stuff and it's just a pain in the búm

Look, when I'm next over I'll fettle it for you ok?

Seriously, stainless steel does not have a coating, i.e. like chrome with steel underneath.
Stainless steel is stainless steel throughout.
I'd still be tempted with a heavy scouring really but still can't understand why you can't shift it.
Our stainless pans have had one or 2 mishaps  , but after a soak anything comes off with the dish sponge and Fairy liquid.

Keep us posted as I'm intrigued to what this pan is made from.

you're not the only one!!!!
I'm relieved to hear that (about the coating) cos to my untrained eye I've convinced myself it now looks 'pitted'....

And boy, it's years since I heard that word 'fettle'....in its correct context.....what part of England are you from (if you don't mind me asking?)

Sorry tj but I did the same with two pans and had to bin them :x One was a big Le Creuset pot and another an expensive aluminium/stainless steel (who knows) saucepan. I got all the black off and they looked as they should, but everytime I used them the contents stuck and I'd end up with black burnt bits in my bolognese sauce etc!! (I got the black off just soaking overnight with biological washing powder btw.) Still mustn't complain, if the Le Creuset hadn't been such a good heavy pot, I think I may have had a house fire

ooh eck. That doesn't sound good...mine is still soaking in oxi stuff so we'll see come morning!!
And I've solved one mystery..I found the biggest one in the set (which I rarely use) and it still had its label on....16/10 stainless steel...so that clears THAT up.Now where's a fettler when you want one??? 8)

Having had a hardware shop I can give you a really good tip if you are buying stainless steel pans etc. As Tj found there are different grades and some of the cheaper ones are very poor, so... take a magnet with you. If the magnet sticks to the pan it is not wholely stainless and the harder it sticks the worse the quality. Pure stainless steel is very hard to damage and is worth the higher price.

hmmmm...good tip, thanks!!!
And I've just had a re-read of the label....not 16/10 but 18/10....does that make it better or worse quality>>???
