Coffee culture in Spain.
In Ireland we have a great coffee culture and some really good coffee shops. As an observation I note a lack of good coffee shops where you can have a "real latte" etc etc & not a coffee with foam on top . I must admit that I can remember a time in Ireland whenn all coffee was from a jar (pre celtic tiger) is it just that spain is behind the UK and Ireland or will people not pay for good coffee and good surroundings (leather couches & arm chairs) ?

Re: Coffee culture in Spain.
We can sit for a couple of hours in the sun (on uncomfortable plastic chairs) chatting over a couple of cafe sombra's( you might prefer a nube). If they had comfy seats, they'd never get rid of us.
Nice idea, but no money in it.

Re: Coffee culture in Spain.
€3 for a tall latte in Ireland !
Re: Coffee culture in Spain.
The '"real lattes" that you get in the UK and in America was taken from the Italian breakfast drink Cafe latte and commercialised by the Americans into what it is now. In Italy, the only time for cafe latte is in a soup sized cup for breakfast with bread or biscuits to dunk in it. I'd much rather drink my cafe con leche (without foam) sitting outside in the sun than sprawled about on a leather sofa inside, you just don't have the weather for it in the UK which is why they have to make the interior more appealing.

My Nonna (grandma) used to give me yesterday's bread. You'd break your teeth on it if you tried to eat it plain but it was loooooovely dipped in your morning coffee
Re: Coffee culture in Spain.

But back on topic. I am curious to see if anyone has found a nice coffee shop. One where the decor makes you want to hang around and have another coffee or a sandwich ? At this stage in my hunt the shop is more important than the beverages .
Re: Coffee culture in Spain.
There is a lovely coffee shop in "La Veronica" Antequera on the first floor. I have to say I do agree with Frog, the Americans have made such a big event of coffee (Starbucks, just look at the prices). In Spain its with no frills but its good coffee, I could never go back to drinking the instant stuff I used to drink inthe UK.

Re: Coffee culture in Spain.
There's a good indoors style coffee shop in the back streets of AeGrande, very popular with the Spanish and packed out in winter.
Spain's coffee culture exists, but outside, in the sun watching the world go by. What about the chocolate culture too - I think they make lovely hot chocolate drinks in the cafes in winter, especially those laced with a little brandy - invigorating yet comforting on a cold rainy day.
I am a tea drinker but will often have a spanish cafe con leche and at €1.25 a cup. I am quite happy with those prices but I wouldn't buy overly expensive coffee lates in UK, I enjoy the Spanish cafe con leches more and the price doesn't make me choke whilst drinking it.
The Spanish bar owners are proud of the standard of their coffee and take the time to prepare it correctly as they should do. Some prefer Tamazor whilst another will select a different supplier and proudly boast his is better.

Hi Scotty, I'm a relative newbie on here, but my advise is to take Frogs posts with a pinch of salt. (Now there's a thought, would they shrivel up like slugs or snails?).
I can relate to him playing the fool at times, to 'get a bite'.
Looks like he's been here a while, and unfortunately all the nasty people have visited his bar at one time or another.
Froggy, sweetie, if you're reading this, Keep 'em coming.
Lovin' your work

At home we are staunch tea drinkers but in a Spanish cafe/bar only drink cafe con leche and it´s always excellent and very reasonably priced. Had visitors once who insisted on ordering tea in a local bar and were given a glass of tepid milk with a tea bag dangling in it.

SL - When we pop across to Portugal, we´re still paying 50cents a coffee!spanish_lad wrote:

Incidentally, here in Spain, whilst i´ve not been drinking coffee the past few months, i have just asked for hot milk....how much is that?..you´ve guessed it...the same price as a coffee! €1!!

Re: Coffee culture in Spain.
The one thing I always complain about when we are back in the UK is the price of a cup of coffee in all these "coffee bars"!!!!!!!!
If they can do it in Spain for £1 a cup, why the h#ll is it so expensive in the UK?
Gus

by the way scotty, ever sent a meal back in a restaurant, ive seen a few things happen over the years so i hope you have
