Help! DVD burning problem...
OK - I've wasted hours trying to do this today and have now given up! Please bear with me, this is the first time I've ever tried to download and burn anything!!!!
I have downloaded a half-hour long fitness video from t'internet. It was an .avi file. I then installed Wondershare and converted it to a DVD format (I think)...took forever! I have now been trying to "burn" it onto a brand new DVD-R disc (also using Wondershare) but after chuntering away for about 30secs, the laptop spits the disc out saying that the drive or the disc is "not ready".
I have also also poked around on RealPlayer (already on my laptop - Acer Aspire 5102WLMi, Vista) in the vain hope that RealPlayer might be able to burn DVDs for me...but am still none the wiser!
I've also found sources for the clip I want in "torrent" format but have no idea what this is or what I'm supposed to do with a torrent file once downloaded simply to transfer it onto a DVD so I can play the bluddy thing in the DVD player!
In words of one syllable or less, can anybody please tell me where I may be going wrong, what prog etc I may be missing, what I'm not doing? Is there an idiot's guide to doing this?????!

Re: Help! DVD burning problem...
How old is your DVD player because a newer one might be able play the AVI file without converting it?
It will say DIVX on the front if it can.
Have you tried burning the new DVD file using a different blank DVD as you can sometime get problems with them

Re: Help! DVD burning problem...
Ages ago I had to burn a wedding video to DVD, and if I remember correctly, there was a difference between re-writable and non re-writable DVDs. Sorry, can't remember which was the right sort, but if you're using one without success, and have one of the other type, try using that !

The DVD player is a just couple of months old but doesn't have DIVX on the front. Have tried with 3 different, all brand new discs (purchased today)...same outcome every time!

I'm also pretty much a novice with DVD-video. I tried nero, this that and the other, and they were so complicated. Eventually, I looked in my Windows 7 programs and used the Windows DVD Maker program, which was the simplest of the lot.
Try that, if you have it.

Re: Help! DVD burning problem...
When you say 3 different discs, do you mean different brands, or are some DVD-R & some DVD-RW ?
I wish I could remember what I did in the end ! I know I went on Burnworld forum and I think I got some help from that, also looking back at emails I see I also joined the forum of the manufacturer of the external DVD drive (Freecom) and something called Imgburn - you could try those
Good luck - I do remember how frustrating it was !

When I tried this a while ago I found I could only use an ordinary DVD disk not a re-writable.
You could try that.

You need a program called convertXtoDVD
You drag & drop the .avi file (or any other type of video file) into the box then click convert. That's it, it even writes the disc for you.

The discs I'm trying to burn to are all DVD-R - from the same pack of 10 I bought y'day. I understand that these are simple once only burn discs, not rewrite ones (RW?).
AFAIK I've already successfuly converted the avi file to a form that should be able to be burnt onto disc...but I'm willing to try anything!

Try burning the original AVI file staight to the disc and see if it will play or alternately if you have a USB socket on your DVD player, transfer the file to a USB stick.

Re: Help! DVD burning problem...
There are two type of format for a DVD-r .. data and dvd video. To complicate maters slightly there are many type of data formats and a couple of other video formats , but what your interested in is making sure that when you burn your converted file to the DVD it is set for DVD Video.
In adition to the AUDIO-TS and the VIDEO_TS folders the software has to also write a lead in and lead out so that the DVD player knows where it is, and what its got to do.
Check yoru writing to the correct DVD format for DVD video on the DVD writer
That said - I would sugest that you coppy the original AVI file onto a data stick and try playing that from your DVD player is it has a USB input port.
Also Som newer TV's also have a USB input.

Isn't there DVD-R and DVD+R ? Will your burner accept -R discs or does it need +R format?hillybilly wrote:The discs I'm trying to burn to are all DVD-R -

Re: Help! DVD burning problem...
Unfortunately, neither my DVD player nor the TV has a USB port...so that option's out!
I tried again using the ConvertXtoDVD programme - same outcome, file converted just fine but the DVD-R disc just seems to be invisible...in a sexy French accent, it kept telling me to insert zee media source ;o)
According to the laptop spec, it supports DVD plus or minus R and DVD plus or minus RW...so am still at a loss! The DVD driver reads and plays stuff just fine, I checked!

Hi hillybilly,
Have you done a simple burn and checked it can read/play it.
It may have a defective burn mode.
Have you checked the .avi file plays before try to burn ?

Re: Help! DVD burning problem...
Nope, don't seem to be able to even do that!!! Not with these particular discs. (I can transfer music to CD discs) I even tried to format them, in case that were required, but they keep being spat out! It's like there's some incompatibility issue between the disc drive and the discs...do I need to "do" something to the drive to make it "see" this type of disc?
