I thought it was just me, but I could not believe the heat in the air yesterday, early afternoon. I am glad I saw this thread as I can now put a name, or two to the phenomena. It was as I imagine it would be in a fan oven. The wind was very strong causing quite a bit of damage to pergolas and plants too.

I opened the door yesterday afternoon and it was like opening an oven door. Spanish neighbours are complaining about the heat already.
ps ... If Julian were here, he'd be talking about paint drying.

If it's not then the reading will be inaccurate.

Exactly, 48° in the sun is utterly meaningless.

The thermometer that got the sun (and said 48 deg) is in the shade till late afternoon.... I do know it is a silly reading, it was on the wall, again in the shade, and was taken down when the house was painted and popped onto a window ledge..... waiting for a new hole to be drilled in the wall (in the shade)
We will get around to it mañana, when ever mañana is

I've never heard of the temperature in Spain exceeding 48C - reliable recordings say that it was 47.8°C in Murcia on July 29, 1976.

As my name suggests, I do lot of hill walking and yesterday was my last day of the walking season.

these last two weeks have been very difficult so I'm very happy the season is over.

However I'm still receiving requests to guide walks during July and August. I'm refusing because its quite dangerous in the mountains during the heat.
I read in a local newspaper of a few walkers who died from the heat last week whilst walking around the mountains in Malaga.

Be careful, peeps.....
putting the "ANDA" into Andalucía..:)

I read it in a newspaper several years ago, where the temps were so high in Seville people just didnt want to go out at all unless they had run out of food, maybe it was further back than six or seven years ago?

We spent a few days there one June. It was 43C in the shade and by 2pm we had to return to the hotel and sit with the air-conditioning on.

There is a non-accredited record by the National Institute of Meteorology which is 47.2 °C (117 °F) on 1 August during the 2003 heat wave, according to a weather station (83910 LEZL) located in the southern part of Seville Airport, near the abandoned military zone.

Thanks for that. Those graphs really show how sudden the spike in temperatures was and how short a time they lasted for - thank goodness.
