Safe foods for a pregnant visitor

Postby peteroldracer » Mon Aug 06, 2012 8:23 pm

We are shortly to have a newly - and first time - pregnant visitor. Most of the stuff to avoid as advised on the web is fairly obvious - booze, rare meat, undercooked eggs and meat products like paté and chorizo, but what about milk? Is the UHT process enough?

UHT milk is sterilised - totally safe.

Thanks Sid - she has already been told by her doctor "no chorizo"!

I was also advised not to eat soft cheeses like Brie and blue cheese but, I ate whatever I felt like in moderation and they only thing that caused me any problems was a prawn sandwich that I ate before I knew I was pregnant and the baby most definitely didn't like!! Chorizo that has been cooked, say in a paella would be fine. It is because of the risk of listeria in cured and smoked (including fish) produce however, the risk of catching it is very low and it is present more in the soft cured cheeses but, can also be present in processed 'ready to eat' foods.

i've had 2 babies here in Spain in the last 3 years, and my advice from the midwife was to ignore the 'english' can and cant haves and to live like the spanish whilst here.

that meant:
all types of chorizo was fine,
cooked prawns were fine,
tuna only once a week (due to amount of vit A in it)
UHT milk fine
jamon ok in moderation tho i tried to avoid it as didnt like the idea of the raw meat, so to speak.

hope she has a great time. make sure she keeps hydrated in this heat!
vino, sol y aire, y seras rico como nadie
