DOG LICENCE
Do i need a licence for a dog in Spain? Are german shepherds classed as a dangerous dog and if so what does this mean?

Re: DOG LICENCE
There is a list of dogs which are classed as dangerous and it also covers any dog over 20kg with certain other characteristics.
I suggest you Google Dangerous Dogs Spain and you will find a lot of information.
here is one example http://www.thedogman.net/DogmanArticlesText.asp?ID=202
This is the most recent law I can find.

Re: DOG LICENCE
Unfortunately, the GS is not on the list of perros potencialmente peligrosos.

...and youll probably find that if you apply for one ... they wont know how to issue one since they do it so very rarely ... in the end they told us not to bother ....
Re: DOG LICENCE
Because a dog the size of a GSD can obviously be "potentially dangerous", why else do people keep them? In UK recently a Jack Russell killed a baby, so I'm sure the bigger dogs would have no problem.Donz. wrote:why 'unfortunately'?

Re: DOG LICENCE
so technically all dogs should be on the dangerous dogs list - or none
I totally disagree about people keeping big dogs because they are potentially dangerous. All dogs have the same tools to maim/kill. Some breeds have a better mechanism for biting, others have a better mechanism for ragging, others have a better thing for stalking (but actually would do nothing after the stalking part)
The German Shepherd (can) excels at working & sports. Yes of course some people have them as guard dogs or just because they can put a potential burglar off with his barking but not everybody does this. A terrier is often more likely to do a whole lot more damage sometimes and is often hardier and more stoic than some larger breeds (in the event of being kicked off by a potential burglar for example).
How many people would have said that a Pit Bull is a fantastic scent dog and is put to work out in the field on rescue missions? But again the trend is that they are all bad. The staffie is known as the nanny dog because they love people. The Dobermann is just a big lump of sillyness. But all these dogs if not raised well and socialised properly, have the ability to do the same as the gobby little chiuahua or yorkie down the street. Nobody moans about the English Bull Terrier that next door have - though they can be very temperamental & stubborn and I have seen the damage they can cause once they have it in their heads to go for it. Or the collie that herded me round my garden as a kid nipping my backside!
Sorry for the lengthy post - my fingers flew away with me! I just think it's sad to say a GSD should be on a dangerous dogs list just because they are a large breed

Re: DOG LICENCE
Come round and burgle my house my GSD will help you out with the stuff.
Re: DOG LICENCE
But they aren't just a "large breed", police forces around the world use them for their aggressive nature, people have them for guard dogs for the same reason. A quick google will show up all manner of attacks by Alsatians, even killing young children. All dogs have it in them, it's just that you're more likely to be killed by a big dog than a small one. I'll leave it there, we have differing views, we'll beg to differ.Donz. wrote: I just think it's sad to say a GSD should be on a dangerous dogs list just because they are a large breed

Re: DOG LICENCE
it's a media thing Frank, as it was with the Dobermanns, the Pits, the Staffies, you rarely hear about the little dogs that bite and hurt and attack and just for a change we got to hear about the JRT the other week.
I am in a world where I DO hear about these problems and issues, the media report what the public want to hear and what authority wants them to print so much of the time it's crazy

Re: DOG LICENCE
I am amazed that more dog lovers have not been on here to take Frank to task and support Donz in his arguments. We have had german shepherds, alsations with straight backs - true working dogs - for nearly twenty years and have never had aggressive attitudes from them. Its the terriers you have to watch for!!! A dog is only as good (or bad) as its owner and should not be judged by its cover - ie you should not stereotype an individual dog from the supposed character of the breed. There are indeed sloppy foolish rotwheilers and gooey pitbulls. In particular for alsations, they are very trainable, so a police dog will be trained to be "aggressive" and "attack", but will also be trained when to stop and return to its handler. A guard dog should also be trained to guard, not attack. An alsation in the family environment will be the best defender of the children and property in that household, and also their best friend and lovable companion.
If there is a problem with a dog, don't blame the dog - find out what the owner is doing wrong and take him or her to task, not the dog.

Re: DOG LICENCE
We had a GSD (well, she was my hubby's originally) who was as daft as a brush, but you could see the 'herding' instinct, particularly if we were out with the kids. She would never accept a treat unless the whole 'flock' was present, leaving the treat on the floor until the last stray one returned It was a sad day when she was put down at age 17 1/2.
Conversely, my step daughter had a JR which would go for you as soon as look at you - they lived with us for a few months, and the JIR was kept in her bedroom and carried outside for walks, as we couldn't risk having the JR interact with the GSD & our 2 cats - there would have been mayhem and it wouldn't have been fair to our animals.
So guess which side I'm on.....

Re: DOG LICENCE
Another vote for GS from me. In fact I'm just about to adopt one.
Re: DOG LICENCE
We have had four GSD bitches since 1976 and only ever saw one instance of aggression, that was when a tramp in Epping forest was about to give me a whack with a stick and my dog had to have a word with him. All four were German bred from top breeders who would guarantee they had excellent temperaments.
I'm not really a believer in the all dogs are good it's the owners that are bad theory I think some dogs like some people are just naturally nasty and a bad owner don't help. And by the way as far as I know there is no such breed as an Alsation.
Mhic.

Nor me, total nonsense, but we always get the "there are no such things as bad dogs, just bad owners" advocatesmhic wrote: I'm not really a believer in the all dogs are good it's the owners that are bad theory I think some dogs like some people are just naturally nasty and a bad owner don't help.

Re: DOG LICENCE
Whatever your views on GSDs, no one could dispute that they are "potentially" dangerous and that is what the Spanish dog law covers - whether you agree with it or not.
