Anyone know where I could buy a tin of Duraglit metal polish ( not liquid, the padding stuff)

It would be useful if you included your location in your profile.
No point someone saying you can get it in their local shop if you live several hundred Kilometres away from them.
If all else fails you can get it for about 7 GBP, including postage, on Ebay.

If you can't find Duraglit or don't want to pay silly prices, may I suggest that you try ordinary toothpaste.
Apply with a soft cloth or a soft bristle toothbrush then wash off with warm soapy water, then polish up with a soft cloth ( cotton is good ).
It is very effective and less abrasive.

There are lots of 'cheap' metal polishes etc available, but be careful because many contain very harsh chemicals and can damage the silver surface.
Using toothpaste is much better...Amongst other 'things', I was an antiques dealer for many years and have used it with great results..
By the way, never store silver wrapped in newspaper, it causes havoc, acid free tissue is the best !.

Sorry to butt in Oliveview, but I've used Goddard's silver dip for years. I just plonk my earrings etc. in the jar of clear liquid and fish them out with a plastic spoon/fork about 30/60 seconds later. Rinse them in clean water and dry with a tissue........... they look like new. Excellent for necklace chains, rings as well. Much less faff than jeweler's rouge.

PS an alternative method I was taught at college to clean silver is to crumple up a length of aluminium foil in a washing up bowl. Sprinkle it liberally with Washing soda, lay the silver, e.g. cutlery on top then cover with boiling water. (obviously don't use this method on anything with bone handles, glue etc.) It's a bit 'Harry Potter' to watch as the reaction bubbles and steams but the tarnish, silver sulphide transfers to the aluminium foil. Rinse and buff, job done.

Sorry..I wasn't ignoring you, I've just been doing 'my bit' to support the local economy....Been for a drink..or two and mega tapas at our local bar.

Anyway..Sandramay is 'spot on' with the silver dip for earrings and small items, we've used it for years , really does clean and refresh silver jewellery, however do make sure that you rinse the items thoroughly, it is quite potent stuff.
The rouge is great for removing stains and scratches..

A good way of cleaning silver is to add a scrunched up piece of aluminium foil, a hand fiull of washing soda to a plastic washing up bowl and add boiling water. Chuck in the silver and watch the tarnish vanish. The chemical reaction between the foil and the washing soda removes the tarnish. It won't affect the silver, the hall marks or plate (if it's epns). DON'T just use the sink as it will react with steel too - have a look at what's left of the foil. It's a cheap easy way to clean cutlery etc and leaves no after taste. I've been doing it this way for years.
