Cheap ipad Ooops, I mean tablet
Has anyone tried one of these cheap ipads now on the market? I do not want to do anything complicated only accessing internet, email and listening to the BBC radio. Tablet not ipad. I taky the oxy out of oxymoron.

Re: Cheap ipad
I don't think there is such a thing as a cheap ipad. Apple control the prices of ipads. Or do you mean a cheap tablet?
With cheap tablets, generally speaking, you get what you pay for?
Google Nexus tablets being the 4exception as they are very good value for their low prices.
Cheers

Re: Cheap ipad
Cheap iPad is a bit of an oxymoron!
I assume you mean what is commonly described as a tablet. There are loads of cheap versions on the market, some better than others. The Hudl recently introduced by Tesco at £99 has had decent reviews whereas the similar one from Argos has been slammed as cheap and nasty.
The cheapest I have seen is the one being sold in the UK by Carphone Wharehouse for £49.
Of the main stream options probably the best one is the new Nexus 7 from Google at £199 - certainly as good as an iPad.
A lot will depend on what level of after sales and warranty support you want.

Re: Cheap ipad
My Wife bought a Sunstech TAB900 for just under €100. It is slow in loading pages but it does everything she wants, i.e. email, games and that's about it. I can watch Channel 5 on Filmon with no buffering. I think it is great, but it is not an ipad!. My daughter also has a Hudl from Tesco. The resolution is not great but, again, it does what she wants it to do and that is important.

Re: Cheap ipad
Does she use the built-in browser or has she downloaded a quicker one? I was a bit disappointed with the browser but now use Opera Mini. It's much faster. She could also try the "Photon" browser as it gives you FLASH. Another free download is "Network signal speed booster". After you download this, click it and watch the signal go up to 5 bars. I also recommend "Clean Master" and "All in one toolbox".ajtg1952 wrote:My Wife bought a Sunstech TAB900 for just under €100. While we're at it, download a battery saver as well. If your tablet is like mine, you may find the volume not up to much. In which case I suggest "speaker boost."
After all these, you'll have a much quicker tablet.

Carphone warehouse in UK have got a special offer of a tablet for £49. I though I would get a mate to buy and bring over unless there is anything better here. That one is reduced from £99.

You need to be careful as to the OS for the tablet (sorry, Operating System!).
Most of them are Android, but the version is important as some of the more useful apps will only work on newer releases of the OS. I bought a tablet that has Android 4.0 and it cannot use quite a few decent apps. Look for 4.1 as a minimum.

Good point about up to date operating system. I have an ASUS Fonepad with Android 4.1.2 and whilst I do not use it as a phone it does work really efficiently. Am happy. I put an extra micro sim card in and can store 25gb of stuff which is enough for me. The single camera facing the user is not fantastic but more than adequate for Skype.

Re: Cheap ipad Ooops, I mean tablet
The Guys have raised a good point about the OS...............a lot of the "cheap" Smartphones and Tablets will not get any updates to the OS.
I'm currently sorting (maybe) one with Version 2.0 ........

All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.
Re: Cheap ipad Ooops, I mean tablet
I bought a cheap Android in the UK from Amazon. The comnpany was "Tabtronics" and when I had a problem with Skype, they sent a prepaid sticker. Tabtronics fixed the problem and the tablet was returned within 2 days. They responded very quickly when I emailed them. If you buy a cheapo, make sure the company gives good back-up.

Not only "cheap" Smartphones also applies to most of the expensive ones.Enrique wrote:The Guys have raised a good point about the OS...............a lot of the "cheap" Smartphones and Tablets will not get any updates to the OS.

The basic OS gets modified by the phone manufacturer then further modified by the seller, such as Orange, Vodafone etc.
When a new OS comes out the seller, in particular, would prefer you to upgrade your phone to the latest model.
Generally speaking, neither the manufacturer or seller is usually interested in supplying an updated OS to you, the customer.

Well, you live and learn...I call my Apple ipad a tablet. I thought it was a new name for it
Re: Cheap ipad Ooops, I mean tablet
Correct an Apple ipad is a tablet but not all tablets are ipads.katy wrote:Well, you live and learn...I call my Apple ipad a tablet. I thought it was a new name for it
Just the same as a Ford Escort is a car but not all cars are Ford Escorts.

Correct - one of the few deficiencies in the Android "open source" approach.
The obvious exception is Google with the Nexus. It's not a problem with iOS on the iPad either.

That's getting a bit small - some phones and phablets are now that big.markwilding wrote:

7" is about the minimum that I would like to see in a tablet. We have both a full size iPad and an iPad mini and it really is a toss up which is best especially now that the Mini has the new retina screen.
