It is probably the same problem with UK registered vehicles in Spain only the other way round.
It is illegal for Spanish insurance companies to insure foreign registered vehicles and whilst there are Gibraltar based UK companies which will provide some kind of questionable cover for UK registered vehicles in Spain there is no Spanish enclave attached to the UK mainland which could reciprocate in the case of Spanish registered vehicles being used in the UK.

moped
I want to put it on uk plates, so no problem with insurance, still waiting to hear from DVLC thats why I posted here, as to buying one from ebay, no chance, no history and besides he wants his spanish one(16yrs old, street cred and all that) as similar one in uk far more expensive.

Re: moped
oh right, so you have already paid for it in the first place, now you are going to pay to get it shipped to the uk, then pay to get it to uk spec (new headlightand restrictor), then pay to get it transfered to uk plates, then when he is finished, pay to get it shipped back to spain, then pay to get it back on spanish plates...pilgrim wrote:I want to put it on uk plates, so no problem with insurance, still waiting to hear from DVLC thats why I posted here, as to buying one from ebay, no chance, no history and besides he wants his spanish one(16yrs old, street cred and all that) as similar one in uk far more expensive.
have you thought this thru? thats not taking into account a uk CBT as the spanish one wont be legal, the insurance costs for a 16 year old with no parents at home, and fuel (does he work? )
...thats why i say buy a cheap one that can be re-sold at the end...

Since when? I had a Spanish motorbike in the UK 2 years ago and a French car last year? Both insured through specialist brokers but it's possible. They give a limited issue until any work is done to convert the electrics and any noise/emission tests and have it VIC checked. I had 4 months in which to change mine and did so.you wouldn´t be able to insure it in the uk.
Also, has anyone considered that Pilgrim may want his son to ride the same bike whilst building experience instead of changing from what sounds quite new, to a 300 'quid' death trap?
You know, this guy Pilgrim is most probably making financial decisions on your answer so you need to be more accurate rather than repeat hear say.
Pilgrim.
If you decide to send it for your son, a garage can do the work quite cheaply if your sons not that way inclined. It'd take less than a morning to complete for an experienced guy so I'd say do it.
Have a look at this link but don't let it faze you, it's easier than it looks, or should be.

Ian. You can ride a moped at 16 in the UK. All bike riders need to take a CBT unless you have full car which you can ride on L plates without a CBT. tTheres age restrictions on that which change every few years so it'll need to be checked out.Not 100% sure but I don´t think a 16yr old is allowed to drive a scooter in the UK. You have to be 17yr old to get yout provisional then you have pass the CBT to validate you to drive it.
At 17 you can ride a bike up to 125cc and not over 12bhp? It was 12 for years but then again it may have been raised. After a CBT you can then take a normal test which will give you two years n a bike 33bhp and under before getting anything more powerfull. Another option at 17 plus is direct access which is a compulsory length of test and gives you unlimited cc and bhp access on a pass.
Spanish lad, if you want to ride around on a 300 quid moped then go ahead. Yes I would consider that money a death trap and although I agree it was just your opinion, so was not being able to insure a Spanish bike in the UK which we all now know to be a 100% made up.
You'll find if you have enough knowledge about a given subject, the need to make up information to fill in gaps won't leave you looking such a plonka.

I have my UK car insured here with one of the above mentioned companies.Beachcomber wrote: there are Gibraltar based UK companies which will provide some kind of questionable cover for UK registered vehicles in Spain
The cover is excellent with breakdown cover far better than any in the UK. The policy is underwritten by Lloyds of London and the cost was not that different to our old policy in the UK.
Dont tar everyone with the same brush!!
If anyone would like their details then please PM me.
