Wi Fi signal booster

Postby pilgrim2 » Sat Jan 25, 2014 7:41 pm

Does anyone have experience of or recommendations for the above . We have a movistar router (is that the correct term?) which is in the centre of the house (very old thick walls) and is ideally placed for indoor use, but I would like to use my wifi gadgets outside on the patio:)

I use a TP Link home plug system where the router connects to one plug and the other, which emits the WiFi signal, can be plugged in anywhere.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-WPA2 ... omputers_1

I used the Netgear extender and it's fine, but it has to be in the range of the router and will then extend the signal for about the same distance. The advantage of the Home Plug system is that the range can be much further as there is no requirement for it to be in range of the router. It will even work at the end of a 50m extension cable.

I bought one of the TPLink extenders that Sid mentioned yesterday. It had one unit to connect to the router and then 2 other extenders. I now have full signal strength throughout the house and this all was setup in 5 minutes - a result!

Great recommendation, Sid.

Cheers

If I understood correctly, the items that Sid mentioned are HomePlug units (i.e. they use the mains cabling to carry the network data). They work fine in many cases, but if you are looking for a pure 'wi-fi repeater', I can definitely recommend the Netgear WN3000RP:

I just bought one of these for a friend who has wi-fi connection problems in some parts of his house. The setup was incredibly fast (less than 5 minutes, including reading the instructions) and it works well.

Bought it for €40 and it was delivered the next day. Not second hand! What're you on about?

I'm having problems connecting my Extender so I phoned Jazztel and they don't support it so have to get the settings from Netgear. Word of warning - if you're with Jazztel get your extender through them (apparently its cheaper too - €25).
