Windows 10 free

Postby Enrique » Wed Jan 21, 2015 8:17 pm

Hi,

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-30924022

Apart from Gerryh any other members playing with the PR version and what do you think of it :?:

Windows 7 users don't get too excited, you will need to check to see if your CPU can support it.

Windows 7 machines CPU does not need to support PAE, NX, and SSE2 for the OS to operate whereas on Windows 8 and above, it needs these features.

You can run coreinfo to check............from the cmd prompt

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sys ... 35722.aspx

So they have almost caught up with Apple who have been offering free OS upgrades for the last two years!

There is something to be said for competition but I doubt that Microsoft can afford to give away their Operating System when they don't really sell a significant amount of hardware.

Hopefully W10 will be a decent OS. I will certainly give it a try - even though it will be running on a Mac. Hence my comment about how do you make a profit by giving away software that runs on other manufacturers hardware - be it Dell or Apple?

Whatever happened to Windows 9?

Did I blink and miss it?

We seem to have gone from Windows 8 to Windows 10.

Windows 8 was such a total disaster that MS wanted to distance the replacement product as far away as possible - hence the jump to W10.

Incidentally, they have either sacked or moved the entire team that was responsible to W8.

I recently installed 10 over 7 on an old laptop. Upgrade took long but worked OK and brought all my W7 settings and programmes with it.

Difficult to compare speed of 10 as this laptop has very little else installed.

I installed a trial of Start8 to get my real start menu back. That works OK on 10.

Chrome browser started with all add-ons still configured (mostly) OK.

So far (only 36 hours) I haven't seen much to make the bother of upgrading my main machine as I set everything on this one to look like W7.

For you morlandg,

Assuming Windows 7 system
Download from...........

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sys ... 35722.aspx

Save file

Right click on coreinfo.zip and choose Extract, a directory is created as coreinfo and the file coreinfo.exe will be in there.

So assuming you have downloaded to C:\Downloads

\coreinfo\coreinfo.exe will be in this location.

From the START globe type in the "search programs and files box"

cmd

The block DOS box will pop up.

cd (change directory) to c:\downloads\coreinfo

type coreinfo

A list of your CPU supported specs will scroll up

check you have a star by the following..............

PAE, NX, and SSE2

NX is the usual no no on older CPU's this may be switched off in the BIOS

If its in the BIOS then you can switch it on.

If not then you will be like me and have to stick to Windows 7 or any of the Linux OS's

on that particular system.

Thanks Enrique. Worked great - I hope your instructions have also proved useful for other users.
The good news is that all three PAE, NX, and SSE2 were starred. I'm all set to go.

I have no doubt I will upgrade when the time comes just to keep the support process going especially as the upgrade will be free. :)

Morning All

I watched the BBC IT programme 'Click' over the weekend, and there was a short item on the new Windows 10, with particular reference to the linked headset (similar to Google Glass?), which seemed to give some sort of virtual reality link to the overall operating system

One thing that seemed intriguing, was that it seemed possible to use the headset to watch whatever was playing on the laptop, on the virtual reality headset? Would that overcome the 'casting' issues mentioned so often on this forum? Other than of course, the problem of wearing a headset all the time.......

Can one of the experts perhaps review my naive thoughts, and put me right please? :?

Thanks in advance

Regards to all

Vincent
