music and smartphone

Postby morlandg » Wed Sep 16, 2015 11:43 am

I have a Moto G smartphone and want to copy music files onto it from my PC. Not itunes. Just MP3 and FLAC files. But where do I copy them to? I have a SD card installed and the phone connected to my PC but there is no obvious folder to drop the files into. Anybody any idea?

When you connect your phone to your PC and open card, on your phone, you should see a folder named "music"
Drag and drop your music files into this folder.

How big a memory is on the phone? FLAC files are not small.

That is why, normally, they are put on the SD card and not in the phone's memory.

Hi Gerry - the problem is there is no music folder and right-clicking on the SD card does not give me a new folder option. Is there a setting on the phone I wonder which diverts the storage of music onto the SD card?

OK. Create a folder on your SD card called "music" drag and drop your music files into it.
Your phone should have the "play Music" app already installed. Just open it and it should find your music folder and it's contents.
Certainly works like that on my wife's Moto G.

The Music folder is on the PC not the phone.

Connect. the phone via the USB.

And then using windows explorer find the Music folder on the PC, then find the memory card folder on the phone.

Then drag the Music folder into the phone folder you want.

Forget about Itunes because it has nothing to do with a Windows phone

OK. You can do that if you want your complete Music folder, from your PC, put on your phone.
Since my PC Music folder over 66GB I don't really want it, or could get it, on my SD card.
It is worth going into settings in the Music Play app and making sure that the storage location is set to "external storage"

If you noticed whilst you were typing your reply I had checked the size and, at the moment, it is just over 66GB. In fact it has it's own 165 GB partition on my HD.

Most of it is in fact sound effects and music that I might use in theatrical productions. Some of it I have not yet played.

Mine is 95 GB, and I lost all of my old one in an harddrive crash back in 2004 something so it is all post 2004.

My solution was as follows:
Connect the phone to the laptop via USB cable. Windows explorer shows 2 folders - internal and SD card.
Only the internal folder had a Music subfolder. The SD card did not allow me to add a new folder. I dragged and dropped a couple of mp3 files from the PC into this Internal music folder. I then unplugged the phone and went into settings and storage and at the bottom page I chose 'Move medial files onto SD card' and then 'music files'. Once completed then I could restart the process above as there was now a 'Music' subfolder in the SD card folder. The number of files you can copy is obviously dependent on the size of the SD card. To add files I would take them from the PC and not try and add from the Music Player.
Hope this makes sense and is of help to someone out there!

Which model of a Moto G do you have and which version of Android OS is it running?
There is obviously something different about your phone and my wife's phone.
I can create folders on the SD card without any problems.

My Wife's phone is the Motorola Moto G 2nd generation with 3G Dual Sim LTE running 5.02 android.
So the only difference is between 4G/3G and single/ dual Sim. Both same OS version so surprised you can't create a folder on the SD card and I can.
How are you trying to create a folder?

OK, I can see your deliberate error.
In file explorer open your SD card, right click on a empty bit of the display, i.e. do not click on an existing folder, select "New" then "folder" and name it "Music" or whatever.
