Cararact surgery

Postby Unicorn » Wed Mar 09, 2016 12:34 pm

Hi there

Has anyone here had cataract surgery on the state?

I am trying to find out the name of the anti-inflammatory drops they use. Apparently the ones advised by private are really pricey. They are called Yellox. Or , indeed, if a prescription can be gotten for those drops from the state doctor.

Thanks for your help.

My wife had a cataract operation under the Spanish health service.
They gave her some drops, don't know whether or not they were anti-inflammatory drops, to put in her eye a couple of days before the operation.Certainly didn't have to pay for anything before the operation.
This was a few years ago, things might have changed.
Cheers

Hi Gerry

Thanks for that. These are drops for a couple of months after the op.

Cheers

As I said it was a few years ago but my wife says she had some drops for after the operation which were prescribed by the hospital and she didn't have to pay for them.
These days there is a prescription charge for some medication.

I can't answer your question about the cost of these drops in Spain, but a couple of years ago I went back to the UK to help my elderly aunt when she had a cataract operation, and she had to have antibiotic eye drops put in four times a day for four weeks after the operation. One tiny bottle lasted the full four weeks with some left over.

Actually, have just looked up the price of Yellox and it is €20.79 for 5ml.
