Rooftop Water Deposit

Postby jukim » Fri Apr 08, 2016 3:11 pm

I wonder if anyone can advise. We have a 300l water deposit which is obviously gravity fed from the roof. Last week the water was turned off (as it does from time to time) but only a drizzle escaped from the deposit. I refilled it as soon as the water came on (although the same amount that came out seemed to fill again). The same has now happened again and I'm at a loss as it's obviously not leaking because it would then continue filling up. Thanks. :wtf:

Sounds like a blockage in the outlet pipe.

That thought crossed my mind, any idea how to clear it?

Almost bound to be; could just be muck at the outlet. Lost any cats lately? (No, No, I didn't say that!)
If the outlet pipe is all you can get at, try sending some air pressure up the pipe. Maybe easier said than done.
Failing that, a plumber.

There is usually a joint at the outlet. Undo it and push something thin through it.

There's a tap that acts as a valve is that what you mean to undo?

Yes. If the deposit is full and there is no blockage, prepare to get wet.

The sun's out and if it frees up the blockage it'll be worth it :) Is it easy to put the tap back on once I have it off (bearing in mind I'm a woman) :)

If the tap is right next to the tank side, leave the tap in place and undo the pipe leading away from the tap first. Might allow you to get a bit less wet. If that fails, then the tap will have to be removed.
I take it you can't peer down into the tank to where the tap-outlet is?
All the tools you'll need are a couple of adjustable spanners, and some PTFE tape for the joints, when you do them up again.

If the tap has a lever which you just swing through 90deg to operate, then, when the tap is open (usually handle is in line with the pipe) you should be able to prod a bit of old coathanger wire right through the tap to make sure it's clear.
If the tap is the old screw-down brass variety, then you won't be able to prod it clear, because it doesn't have a straight path through. FIrst sort of tap better; you can replace the latter with the former - take the old one with you when buying a replacement, so you get the right size and fitting.

Hope helpful.

hey hey

... it sounds like the tap is broke, and not letting water through.

but.. it depends where you are getting the water from? is the tap that you are opening a long way from the tank? or is it the same on all taps in the house ?

Thanks everybody... all sorted, it was the outlet valve from the deposit that was broken ;)
