Re: Spain political uncertainty
Interesting and optimistic posts. In our local elections recently I asked the young IU candidates on the IU list if they were going to be as corrupt as the PP. They said they didn't know as they had not yet had the opportunity to be corrupt. At least they were honest about that.

Re: Spain political uncertainty
Among my Spanish acquaintances, young and old, their voting intentions in the second election are as follows:
Those who voted PP will do so again (Because they have never done anything other)
Former PP voters who voted for Ciudadanos will vote for PP again (Because Rivera tried to do a deal with the devil)
The one and only who voted PSOE is not sure (Because he thinks Sánchez is a demagogic control freak)
And I don't know anyone who admits to actually having voted for 'la coleta'.

I have an English aunt in law that lives it Scottish Scotland. She was undecided over the merits of voting out or in in their referendum. Her many Scottish friends soon persuaded her that the right thing to do was be patriotic like them and vote for independence.

Is there a different type of Scotland?
Re: Spain political uncertainty
Easy to forget in the EU ref frenzy, that Spain is voting soon.
Unidos Podemos is making grounds.
PP to get most votes but we end up with a left wing coalition?

Re: Spain political uncertainty
You are right, Olive. A Podemos government may affect our lives here in Spain more than the UK leaving the EU might. The headlines about the increases in taxation Podemos want to pay for the inevitable spending rounds are enough to make me uneasy. Still, an increase of tax on nothing is still nothing.

An article by Open Europe discusses a possible outcome here.

Good link, Katy, but it doesn't tell us much more than we can work out for ourselves. Still, it's nice to have experts support our political meanderings. Maybe, just maybe, it is time for the current EU/Euro set-up to be radically overhauled. As the political elites have not done so up to now, maybe, just maybe, they will react if forced to by the ordinary voter. We live in interesting times.
PS I've just been reading about Simon de Montfort and his parliament during the time of Henry III (in Spanish). Sometimes eggs need to be broken to make a cake.

On Tuesday 19th January this year I posted (13th post down) that there were stories circulating that Podemos received illegal money from Iran. It seems that there's another source of possible illegal money for the squeaky-clean boys:

Re: Spain political uncertainty
How's the Spanish political scene shaping up? In some senses, it looked like little change, but in other senses like Podemos and Ciududanos, the fall in percentage was a game changer.

Re: Spain political uncertainty
The PP look like they are going for approval to form the next government but will rely on the PSOE to abstain. The PSOE are not very clear in what they intend to do but Suzanne Díaz from Andalucia is set to challenge Sanchez for the leadership of the PSOE this Summer. Sanchez looks good but is rather hopeless and has just lost two elections in a row. Ms Díaz seems very intelligent and vocal but I don't know much about her other than she is powerful in the PSOE. I could Google her, I suppose, but it's too hot.
Errejon is set to challenge Iglesias for the leadership of Podemos as they have lost support in the recent elections. Although they gained two seats they lost a million votes due to some complicated system of counting votes, I suppose. Who knows? Anyway, Errejon is not exactly clean having taken all that money from Venezuela for a consultancy lasting only a few months but all these Socialists are a bit suspect — as are all the Capitalists. Honestly, what a world we live in today. Politics stink to high heaven everywhere. Only my opinion, of course.

Re: Spain political uncertainty
I've heard Podemos might have suffered from 'the be careful what you wish for' effect
Brexit has frightened a lot of Spanish voters out of protest voting. It seems without the nationlist vote in The Basque Country and Catalunia, they would have done really badly
It's not suprising therefore that they won't compromise on their promise of a referendum for those two regions.

Yes, Thanks for the thumbs up...lets face it..the british swing one way or the other way,... whatever sounds good at the time...or whichever way politiians sound the loudest...British people love glory and rule Britannia but that doesn't really put the bread on the table..I've seen and heard enough...England win first football game in Eu or World Cup and what do we hear! we are going to win the cup and suddenly it's the main focus of the news..We are in a bubble and once we get out of it then perhaps we will get somewhere..

Too true about the football. England are so embarrassing and cringe making. It's supposed to be our national game but we haven't won an international competition in 50 years. How awful is that!
