Just been through this with a chap I supplied a car to in Spain, also with LD. They would not honour his NCD in the UK, which surprised me.

Maybe he just had a stickler/jobsworth on the other end of the phone but that was the outcome!

I would have thought that written proof would be ok. You either have NCB or not.

I'm certain some companies will except it, some companies now even give you an introductory NCB anyway nowadays, however as I say this particular company just a few short weeks ago would simply not accept the Spanish NCB and charged him full up.

Sadly he had to take the policy out as he could not UK tax the car on his Spanish insurance and be legal to drive over here for his extended stay.......European integration for you, not

I returned to live in the UK in Nov 2014. Bought a new car here and had NO problem getting my UK Insurer to accept the Spanish NCB and they didn't ask for written proof!. I was with Linea Directa in Spain. Before I moved to Spain 10 years previously, I had been with Frizells ( now owned by Liverpool Victoria) and went back to them. I don't know if that made any difference.

Direct line in uk wouldn't accept NCD from Linea Directa. Saga would. Nationwide wouldn't. You just need to try a few companies.

Just out of interest, how do premiums compare, Spain v UK? I know it's a bit of a hard one because it depends on post codes etc., and also vehicles, but just as a general idea....?

Thanks for info. I am with Linea Direct here and telephoned Direct Line in UK and they said that they would not accept spanish NCB , I then tried Aviva and they will accept it so asked for quote and for roughly the same cover and excess the premium was about the same as I am paying here.

Some do some dont as others say. I asked "more than" who i was with before we left and at the time they said they would except spanish NCD. Frankly you should get double the discount if you avoid any claims while in spain

How do premiums compare?

In 2012 the premium for my Hyundai Santa Fe SUV with Linea Directa was €501. For the period Dec 2015 to Dec 2016 the premium (in Milton Keynes) for the current model of the Hyundai Santa Fe with LV is £498. Allowing for exchange rates and the fact that the current car is a later and more expensive model I don't think there is a lot in it between Spain and UK insurance premiums with the proviso that premiums in the UK do vary a lot depending on location.
