No need for GB sticker with EU/UK numberplates?

Postby Devils Advocate » Wed Aug 30, 2017 5:52 pm

Just been told I don't have to apply the oval GB sticker if car carries EU marked number plates whilst travelling in Europe, jury seems to be out on this though reading through some other forums. What do you reckon?

I opted out of the EU marked plates anyway on the car we're using in favour of plain so I'll have to do something for the trip one way or another.

Hi D.A.
You will need an EU sticker if you have plain plates.

You will see loads of cars on the ferry over without EU stick or conforming Plates. Also a load don't have headlight converters, Some models will have a switch over so converters not required.
Check what you need to carry when driving through France and Spain..........

Thanks Enrique once more, appreciated. I'd better start getting all this kit together now haha. Annoying as I've already got it in the car over there but that doesn't count I'd guess :D

Surprised I'll need the breathalyzer kit too!

Interesting what you say about needing an EU sticker if my car has plain plates. Is that an EU sticker "or" a GB one, take your pick thing?

Again, many thanks!

Never heard of the emmission sticker law CK. Any chance of saving me a hapless google and saying in a nutshell what it is please :P

As an aside just ordering up some EU/GB plates to avoid sporting the oval badge!!

As I just posted in your other thread, you don't need it. You are not going anywhere near those cities where it applies.

Many thanks Sid, nice one. I'd already bought a twin pack test kit so may as well lob that in anyway. Glad I don't need any more stickers though

You still need to register your car emissions whether your going into those cities that apply or not.

France has introduced 'clean air' windscreen stickers as a legal requirement in some of its cities, to identify a vehicle’s emissions levels and to, in some cases, restrict access in order to improve air quality.
British drivers heading to France are advised by the RAC that driving without a French 'clean air' sticker, called a Crit'Air vignette – which costs as little as €4.18 – makes them culpable for an on-the-spot fine of up to £117.

As you say, only in some cities such as Paris. Others have the ability to use them in emergencies. The only city that could affect DA is Bordeaux, which "may" introduce it later this year, but even then, it would only apply in the city, not on the ring road.

That said, it doesn't take much effort to get one, but it is incorrect for anyone (as many websites do) to state that they are generally required (thanks CK for also pointing out that they are limited to certain cities). Pedantic, yes, but I prefer to post correct, up to date information, how it is interpreted and acted upon is up to anyone who chooses to read it.
