ADSL Internet Connection

Postby Beachcomber » Mon Feb 20, 2006 11:52 pm

Just wondered if anyone else has noticed a marked increase in their Telefónica broadband connection speed recently and whether it has any bearing on the fact that when I visited some sites I would get an advertisement that was location specific to the area in which I live but now it seems to think that I am in Teguise which is in Lanzarote! :?

Do you mean an increase beyond the one they brought in last summer when the 752 (?) kbs went up to 1 MB?
Mine hasn't gone up since then and remains at 1MB.

No I don't mean an increase in the advertised connection speed. When I do a bandwidth test it shows the same as before, about 850 kbps. but just the fact that web pages seem to load far more quickly than they did before and if I do a trace on my IP address it shows up as Las Palmas but I am sure that previously it showed Sevilla/Málaga.

I'm still getting the 752. No noticeable changes for my kit.

Now you have explained what you mean by the speed increase, I checked a few sites this morning that I use every day and did notice an improvement on one site which habitually takes a measurable time to load.

Let's hope it continues.

Meseta, the previous contracted speed was 512 now it is 1024 or 1Mb. If you do a bandwidth test it will show the actual speed you are achieving at that moment.

Sid, yes sorry I didn't explain very well. Did you do a trace on your IP address?

No, the highest speed I have measured is 890 kbps but it does vary depending on which test site you use.

I usually find the Telefónica site to be on the optimistic side but at the moment they are returning lower speeds than Bandwidth Place.

Your link gives my location as Las Palmas as does this one:

http://www.dnsstuff.com/

That's why I think Telefónica must have changed something within its network.

There's nothing geographical about an IP address. Web sites such as those referred to above just look up the owner of the block of IP addresses that includes your address. (The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority- IANA - allocates blocks of IP numbers to organizations.) This will usually be your ISP and the location returned will be the registered office of the ISP, not where you are.

If your 'location' has changed recently, it's probably because your ISP has changed the address (postal!) registered with IANA.

There are alternatives such as Spantel but what they are like I have no idea.

To check ADSL speed I use:
www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp

There are loads if you Google ADSL SPEED TEST. You will be spoilt for choice! :)

I use:

http://www.telefonica.es/index/empresas ... cidad.html

to check my ADSL speed.

The other companies who offer landline ADSL in Spain are nothing more than resellers for Telefónica. Even the wireless internet connections pass through the Telefónica network at some stage.

I got 817Kbps with the adsl guide and 815 with the telefonica test, so virtually the same.

However my Upstream speed was only shown as 23Kbps. Is this something I should be worried about?
