Health Card on Retirement

Postby Lavanda » Mon Jun 03, 2019 4:55 pm

This may have been covered before but I received Spanish health cover and my card at the age of 54 because my husband had retired and was entitled to health cover. When I reached retirement age the DWP sent me an S1 to apply for health cover. I didn't send it back as I already have health cover. A few days ago, a friend, recently widowed, said I should apply for the health cover under my own qualifying conditions as if my OH died I would have no cover of my own. Is this true?

I'm not sure about this, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case. I remember a few years back an elderly American friend of mine, resident in Spain for 30 odd years, found that when his British wife passed away, he had to re-apply for residency; he was told he was no longer married to an EU National & therefore did not qualify on those grounds

I would strongly suggest you get cover in your own name.
Then there isn't any doubt of your cover if your husband dies before you.
On the other hand you never know you might get divorced.

It’s easy to do, just make an appointment at the INSS and present your S1 and it just happens. No new card, you keep the same number etc.
