Overheating laptop

Postby tubalitas » Sun Sep 01, 2019 5:38 pm

I use a fairly old laptop with windows and linux systems but for some reason it gets too hot using windows after about 30 minutes and shuts down. I have elevated it on a small cage so no restrictions air wise but no diff. Using linux 24/7 is no prob. If anyone knows the reason why I would be interested.

Wild guess, maybe linux simply doesnt have the code to monitor temperature.

Hi tubalitas,
Get some info first...........

Fire up Task Manager in Windows and see if any programs are constantly working the CPU

Download and run HWMonitor.......

https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

also CoreTemp ........this many not run depending how old the CPU is

https://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

Get a can of compressed air.... "Air Duster"...... and blow out any dust.

Have a look in BIOS for any FAN Speed control settings.

Its the BIOS that sets the CPU thermal cut out Temperature .

When out in Spain during the Summer months with no house A/C we would have "Cooling" pads under the Laptops (note the laptops where not cutting out without)

EXAMPLE.............

All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

Thanks Enrique will do your suggestions, I don't like windows but this thing used to run it ok. Zorin works perfect so not too concerned but should be able to use both. Maybe my machine has probs like dust but for your info this is what I use. https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ROG-G73Jh/

Not an expert but the specs look pretty good and should be able to cope with Windows. I had a windows 7 tower some years back and after some time, the fan started to get really loud. As I could unclip the side, I used to clean it with one of those compressed air sprays and the computer became quiet again.
