Valley of the Fallen
So, i understand that Franco's body has been exhumed. But using the same logic (that the edifice should truly be a memorial to both sides in the civil war) why is Primo de Rivero still effectively lying in state as founder of the Falange - a movement dedicated to creating a right wing dictatorship and violently suppressing regional autonomy, and of course represented on the military side by Franco. I'm guessing it was because he died before the civil war - i think.
Re: Valley of the Fallen
My guess would be that PSOE haven’t yet got around to it but eventually they will. I did briefly discuss the Valley of the Fallen with my Spanish neighbours a while back, but it didn’t seem a matter of great interest, more, “why would you want to visit” ?
Re: Valley of the Fallen
Impressive site as you drive past I must say

Re: Valley of the Fallen
We went there several years ago, and as costakid says, it was very impressive and well worth a detour......
Re: Valley of the Fallen
Saw it from the motorway when driving to segovia. Didnt know what it was at the time. Very odd and i guess an
impressive sight
impressive sight
Re: Valley of the Fallen
We went last year ,just before the exhumation , on a Sunday.
Very touching experience especially when the Francoistas came in for the serivice.
It needs some money spending on it . Dont know about Rivera.

Re: Valley of the Fallen
I wouldn't make a long detour
Re: Valley of the Fallen
Why wouldn't you?
One of the worlds largest stone crosses?
A basilica bigger than St Peters hewn out of rock.
A monument , however you define the word, to Francos reign and many deaths.
Most people would be moved by a visit, make the detour

Defo worth a detour. Unless your a Brit abroad who is only interested in lager and chips then go as it is iconic. I am not saying drive to see it from Malaga but if your anywhere near well worth a look.
Re: Valley of the Fallen
Don’t drink lager but ok. then I Would place it 25th on my bucket list of places to see in Spain

Very true Ashtondav
Top of my bucket list is a return to Toledo, have been to the Jewish quarter but was no time for El Greco museum...does this count as not a monument? Also Merida, Extremadura for the music festival.

Re: Valley of the Fallen
Toledo, Galicia region for the sea food and San Sebastian are all a must see.
Re: Valley of the Fallen
Continuing off-piste, but I agree with Toledo, Katy. There was a museum of tapestries, many years ago, that I could have spent an age in and I didn't get around enough of the city itself.
