1966 WC Final

Postby Parilla » Sun Jun 14, 2020 10:34 am

Had a hugely enjoyable Saturday night watching the '66 England - W. Germany final, original black and white footage and commentary. It must be 50 years since I last watched that game, and I expected to find noticeable differences from the modern game in tactics, technique, fitness etc. It was a very pleasant surprise to see how wrong I was. There were many players, on both sides, who would prosper in the modern game, and it was a reminder of what a brilliant talent Bobby Moore was - probably the greatest central defender and captain I have ever seen.

What was very noticeable was how much more enjoyable the game was without the shirt grabbing, pushing and shoving, rolling around with "injuries", and what a treat to see the respect the players had for their opponents and the referee.

Agree. I watched it over a couple of days on C4 catch up and was expecting a much slower pace. It was actually he first time I had watched the entire match.

On match day I was racing motorcycles at Cadwell Park - had I think 5 races in the day, and between times popped down to watch the others at the hairpin. A marshall had a portable radio, and once the match started put fingers up to indicate goals, accompanied by thumbs downs or ups as appropriate. All who were there got the idea that things were close as he started to run out of fingers!

For my personal interest Peter what make of bikes were you riding, I've had bikes since I was 16, Started with a B S A Bantam then a Royal Enfield, B S A A10, a Bonny, Norton dommy, A panther 650 (from which I removed the chair) I toyed with the Idea of a Velocette once then marriage got in the way ! I was once offered a Brough S S 80 for around £900.00 in the early seventies but it was just a frame, tank and some parts in a crate, I'm not an engineer so I declined, I don't know who many times I've kicked myself since ! there is a company in France now making new Broughs for around 60 grand a piece, having said that an original SS 100 can now be snapped up for around £150000 ! Did you ever meet Dave Degens ?

I had a few road bikes then decided I would not be living long if I kept on...took up racing with a Bantam, a 250 DMW Hornet, then the ex-works 250 AJS, bought a 125 Yamaha from Padgetts (4th in 125ccTT in '71), added a TD3 250 Yamaha and rode a few others for dealers - a 250 Kawasaki took me to 5th in the Production TT, rode a 500 Triumph in the Barcelona 24-hours, a 250 Honda in Thruxton 500-miler.
Round my way the first place you looked for your engine if the bike was stolen was a certain South London dealer....
I regret not buying a 500 Manx Norton when they were a couple of hundred quid, now worth 30-40k and up.

In these ridiculous times of black lives matter should you not be saying I watched it in monochrome? I am joking of course as long as no one is offended.

I had a B S A A10 once the frame was black and the petrol tank was chrome, there was never any conflict !

I remember watching it as a 7 year old on the little tv in our lounge with my mum, sister and grand parents. Dad was a mechanic at the local garage and couldn't get the time off so he missed watching it live although he heard it on the radio.

Then a few weeks later I and many of my school pals were treated by our dads, they took us to the local cinema to watch it again in colour. To us kids it was so fantastic seeing the red shirts and the gold of the cup. My player of the match at the time was Alan Ball, he, for me, was the central key player.

This arrived with the South American players, playing in Europe. The rest quickly learned !
