I would be more worried about the tax authorities thinking you had undeclared (on Form 720) property outside Spain.

Yes. That's another point. As complicated as it might get I think honesty is best — which is why I am poor and not a politician.

I honestly can't see how a care of address on the bank account makes any difference to my Spanish residency? Our property in UK is declared on the 720 my savings etc are declared, the UK house will be rented out. I have simply followed the advise of the bank and used a care of address. I don't really want to change direct debits etc as things can go wrong . As for confusion i agree. I am just passing on what I was told and how my bank worked around it.

As far as tax is concerned, just because your name as registered at an address doesn't mean you own it so it shouldn't be a problem. It would be more to do with Barclaycard's terms, if they are OK with a contact address in the UK.

I also agree that residency should not be affected.

I totally agree and my branch in UK are quite happy for us to use a care of address and use online banking.

If your bank is quite happy and even suggests a co address then theres no issue. The problem thats come up are uk banks saying you have to have a uk address to hold the account ie be a uk resident.

Just reading on other sites that Barclays are sending out emails stating a change in their T&C's stating we can, if you are a non uk resident close your current account. Not saying they will but obviously making plans if they do decide to start closing them if no deal is done.

Both I and my wife received emails today.
Taken from their new terms and coinditions:-

"We can close an account (and stop providing any services and end this agreement)
by giving you at least two months’ notice. Any benefit or services linked to your
account will stop at the same time. However, if you have a Barclays Basic Current
Account, we can only do this if:
• you have access to another payment account in the UK with basic features
you’re no longer legally resident in the UK, or
• there haven’t been any transactions on your account for more than 24 months.
So they haven't said they will do it, but they might.
Cheers

As reported by Gerryh, the Barclays T&Cs state:

However, if you have a Barclays Basic Current
Account, we can only do this if:
• you have access to another payment account in the UK with basic features
• you’re no longer legally resident in the UK, or
• there haven’t been any transactions on your account for more than 24 months.

What might be missing from this statement to make us REALLY worried is an "and/or" for each of those three conditions, because it seems to me, from that wording, that all 3 points need to be fulfilled before Barclays could close the account in April.

Is that anyone else's reading?

A revision from my previous post now that I've read it again!

There is an "or" at the end of the second point: so does that now read "we can only close your account if there is access to another UK payment account AND you're not living in the UK OR you haven't used the account for two years."

So, it seems to me that Barclays cannot close my account because it's the only UK acount I have despite living exclusively in Spain.
Others may have different circumstances of course, but there may be time to alter your circumstances to fit the conditions to your advantage.

I read it as one of any of them.

I only have a Barclays bank account in the UK so don't have "access to another payment account in the UK with basic features" assuming a UK Paypal account doesn't apply.
So if there is an implied AND between the first two statment then I should be OK.

That's how I read it, Gerry (and my circumstances seem to be identical to yours)
There is an actual "or" between two and three, so perhaps one can assume, as you suggest, there is an implied "and" between one and two.

Incidentally (it may have been noted in this thread way back) but there would be an alternative bank account one could open: Transferwise, with a sort code (to receive payments e.g. pension payments) and with a plastic card for use if one went to the UK. Someone told me Revolut do the same. Not covered by all the usual banking safeguards so one would have to be careful.

However, Allgram has just posted another thread called "Revolut" saying that he now has a problem because Revolut have changed their IBAN code to LT from GB. If Transferwise should do the same, that could remove that possible alternative for people whose pension providers, for example, will only make payments into a UK account (as my main provider will). Luckily my bank (First Direct) haven't given any indication that they will be closing accounts of customers who don't have a UK address (at the moment, at least).

I emailed Transferwise this afternoon:
Since your operation will be based in Belgium will a GB pound account continue to have a GB IBAN reference after 31st December 2020?
to which they replied:
The GBP bank details you have are local GBP bank details and will continue to be valid for receiving GBP payments from within the UK.
