When simple meals taste great....

Postby BENIDORM » Sun Mar 06, 2022 12:44 pm

During the past few weeks we've been so busy that we started to rely on very simple meals, quick and easy snack meals, probably not that healthy but I've really enjoyed them.
Lots of meals with toast- beans , cheese, tinned tomatoes etc...my favourite and egg and chips, bacon 'butties',
sandwiches, tuna mayo, egg mayo, ham, chicken etc...

I wonder, do any of you have these snack meals occasionally..?..

Now to balance our diet we are going to have a week of salads, lots of fruit etc. and maybe beans on toast....as a treat.... :D

I don't eat meat sausages but I am partial to some Quorn ones with a pile of buttery mash and baked beans at times. It's winter comfort food. I like that we have winter and summer seasons so we can have a change of diet. I eat a lot of salads and veggie food in the hotter months, and like to make Greek and Mediterrenean stuff, but winter I tend to revert to good old-fashioned stodge! I had crumpets last week .... ooohh that unmistakable flavour and texture of a well toasted crumpet with butter running through it.

Wicksey,
I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one to admit to eating lashings of butter....
I don't eat margarine, only best butter and I drink whole milk..

Not sure how true it is, but I read a long time ago about all the 'stuff' that goes into margarine so I switched back to butter. I actually use very little as we never usually butter bread or crackers. It tastes so much better so I can't see the harm in a modest amount of it (although my cholesterol results say something different to that). I don't like milk and my OH likes skimmed so our dairy fat intake isn't too scary. On a crumpet it just has to be butter, same with toast and marmite!

I like butter although i don't use it often because i don't butter bread for sandwiches..I can't for the life of me get away with Spanish brand butter, it has a strange taste.I have found it hard to find English/Irish/French butter in Suppermarkets, there probably isn't much call for it in a predominantly Spanish area. Can never find back bacon unless i go to Lidl and even then it's just to say passable but i prefer it to the Spanish stuff.Having said that bacon isn't what it used to be no matter where you go.

2 slices of white squishy bread.

Butter both slices.

Top 1 slice with ham.

Top it with a generous portion of cheese and onion crisps.

Place the second slice on top.

Press down. Hard!

Enjoy!

Mercadona do "Cebolla Frita".
Its a pot of crispy fried onions.Utterly brilliant to sprinkle on sandwiches( best on top of the mayo or sauce).
I've been known to have a "buttie" of just mayo with these onions. :shh:
Great too sprinkled into soup.

Wicksey,
You are probably really wise not using too much butter, moderation is best, but for me I can't help myself I love butter on sandwiches etc, however I have cut down on cheese consumption.
I'm sure that we all eat or drink the wrong things or too much but with so many conflicting reports about what is supposed to be good or bad for you , I've decided just to eat and drink what I enjoy...

Pamela 1,
The butter we use is mainly from Germany and I prefer the salted version.
I often think back to when I was a child and my Mother always used Anchor butter, but I tried some recently and it just didn't taste the same or perhaps it's just me , my tastebuds packed up and left my mouth years ago... :D .

jonbar1,
I have tried a similar version to your recommendation and it's really another one that sounds quite revolting but actually tastes great....
All this talk about food has made me feel hungry, I'll have to go and see what I can rustle up without Mrs. B noticing...

Anyone out there who, like me, is a "fish-finger buttie" fan; I can highly recommend Aldi's ( Merluza) fish-fingers
More authentically tasty than the much-loved "Birdseye" version.

Fish fingers wraps for dinner .... we know how to live it up! I like Mercadonas as they grill well and go crispy. Generally they don't do battered or breaded fish that cooks well in the oven here.

Yes, eat sensibly and you will live a few years longer to spend the rest of your life dribbling in an armchair in a care home.

Live for now!

Sid
Totally agree with you.
Some of the things I eat are considered unhealthy and could possibly shorten my life.
But I enjoy them and they make me happy.
Cheers

Spill the beans gerry!

When we were young, roast dinners had extra fat on top of the fat that meat contained in those days. I Well remember mothers at the time saying fat is good for your joints……

When I socialise with other farmers, they always offer some of their snap. Invariably Salchichon and other unhealthy home made products. The best by far is slabs of pancetta with a thin vein of meat between an inch of fat. Apparently delicious with bread.
