Supposedly it biodegrades everything. All I know is that it works. It's a huge yellow two-chamber tank. All you can see is the hatch and the chimney-like vent - which has never emitted any smells, even when very close to it. It's buried on a steep slope, so drainage is very good. The nearby trees look very healthy!

Could be just 22 years of constipation?
Sorry! I’ll now shut-up!

If it's installed properly then they should work like a mini sewage treatment plant. The bacteria deals with the solids and the grey water leaves through weeper pipes.
Our gestoria told me that it is the law here that the septic tanks must not discharge the grey water, which is madness as that's how they work (I've had many different tanks over the past 34 years!). I watched one installed across the valley that sits by the track and they've built a wall around it. It has no exit pipes as it's right on the trackside. When I lived in France you had to have huge amounts of drainage weeper pipes installed (providing you had enough land) so the minimum amount was left to go out into the ditch or onto the land.

If you have - and use - a bidet there is no need for toilet paper.

Sadly not one of our three bathrooms has a bidet! And in response to Sid, yes to get our DAFO we had to have a separate tank installed to take and hold the grey water!!!

Now we have the DAFO the plumber has fitted a tap to the second tank, so the lemon trees get lots of water. Good old Spain.
