what makes americans stand out in Spain?
Yes, tourists look alike but when a Spanaird meets you... even before you speak, they know if you are an american.

As partner is American we have had a few of his countrymen and women to stay ... in my experience I would say that away from the group they appear very nervous of, well just about everything ... one wore a special purse fastened round his calf hidden by his trousers (to deter robberies), several declined to buy olive oil to take home as gifts because it might leak in their suitcase, some would not eat garlic as their breath would smell, we took a couple to a delightful old farm Hospederia Retamar, near Riogordo, has a bar, pool and restaurant with stunning views ... have to drive up crazy rough track to reach it (to me thats half the fun) their comment was 'great place, shame about the location' , others I think suffered from vertigo as country lanes seemed to freak them out and they were only really happy on the coastal motorway ... they talked endlessly about their huge expensive properties back home .... one even had the nerve to tell me that he had a workshop bigger than our main room! Only my British reserve and polite upbringing kept me back from being very very rude! I am just very grateful that unsurprisingly none has wanted to come back!

a quick check of the weight stats of comparable countries would show
approximately the same percentage of weight problems...

it's a simple case of some do, some don't and some never will -

i haven't seen an american wearing this type of clothing anywhere for over
30 years... and i doubt that you have either...
as for the 'over-weight' issue -
are there more over-weight people in america than in england - yes

Nevada smith ... yes of course you are right, people are individuals and as such react differently in different situations ... but if I remember rightly the original post was about what makes Americans stand out ... and for me it was those experiences I recounted which made my American visitors stand out in my memory ...

(a very 'general' query as to how one 'identifies' americans 'on the street')
you gave examples of people, known to be americans, who guests in your home
(a very 'specific' response of descriptions and anecdotes)
and i was definitely not judging or criticizing your abilities as a host -
a guests' enjoyment depends as much on the guest as on the host... perhaps more, as i've always thought that any relationship should be at least 51, 51...

nevada smith..this may not describe you yourself but definitely fits ..made in USA.Clothing, plaid pants, that kind of thing, baseball caps, cameras and video cameras strung round neck, talking, often loudly and inappropriately

OK Nevada you don't like 'tourists 1' as a representation, try 'tourists 2' and if you don't like that either try using your imagination to update it to tourist three or four. Duane can't do it for you unfortunately as he died ten years ago, but I don't think it's too big a challenge, as you can see from the time lapse between 1 and 2 styles don't change that much.
