Spelling and throwing rocks

Postby toddcl » Thu Dec 07, 2006 7:42 pm

I get embarrassed by Grouser for a spelling mistake Barmy / Balmy
Then I go to the London Tornado thread {been removed} and what do I find?

Grouser can't spell Adolf.

I was brought up that people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

'I'm Dyslexic whats your excuse'.??????????

Never mind todd, I think barmy evenings would probably be much more fun. :)

has anyone looked at the standard of students attaining A level passes in the UK, spelling and grammar are no longer a paramount concern of the teachers (most of them don't know right from wrong)
so please can we drop the English language debate before people really do start throwing stones!!

Woooooow, Steady Now girls and boys.

My point is that even with spelling mistakes, typo's and incorrect grammar. We all understand the content of the subject 99% of the time.

So please can we drop the English marking and criticism?

Thank god we have not got anyone who can only type in text message.

On a serious note it is, of course, the strength of the english language and one of the reasons its use is so widespread, that you can be understood if you get it slightly wrong.....and today´s "wrong" can evolve into tomorrow´s accepted usage. A Dutch acquaintance in Spain said he found english easy (apart from the spelling which was "bizarre") as it had little grammar.
so.......was that a brick I just saw flying past my ear?

My teacher friends complain about marking endless pages of English and having to correct them. Well they could post the homework on this site as we have quite a few who do nothing but troll through postings looking for any slight mistake and then make a big thing about it.

They could be earning serious dollar, marking exam papers.
However the pass rate would fall and Tony would complain about them being to critical.

I fully agree with Todd's post. Many people stop posting because of the insults.

For example I know one poster waited for me to correct my spelling mistake and then made a big deal about it, it just seems so petty, and so irrelevant, some times your fingers just move quicker than our brains and you hit the wrong key, and your eyes are not on the screen, but on the key board.

So lets practice what we preach, we are all on here (well most of us) because we live in Spain for less stress and a tranquil pace of life, lets not be so "correct" and live and let live

Not always!!!

I'm profoundly dyslexic and some words such as barmy and balmy would pass the spell check.

I know what I meant and so does everyone else, but a few have to make a song and dance about every little thing.

toddcl - I hope you didn't think my post was a dig at your spelling. Certainly wasn't intended, just humour  But I thought Grouser was just being humorous too.
Generally I don't make too many mistakes when spelling, grammar who knows? I'm more dyslexic when speaking unfortunately. Last week said Thankias in the newsagents

me too... a lot of people just can´t spell correctly (including some who correct others)..but its no big deal... understanding the message is all that's needed... this topic come up again and again... it does not stress me..but I do find it so so boring and uncalled for.
It is not a sin...nor a sign of lack of knowledge, laziness or intelligence... but then..I can´t spell... I´m not proud of it..nor ashamed of it..

I don't think they are always making a song and dance, I think they are just joking most of the time (what about my "palava" :) ) if not it is sometimes a response to the content of the post overall or to dig at someone who may have made an unjustified or abusive post about them.
