I havent noticed a lot of correction or" singing and dancing" over spelling... but when its done I agree its either a joke or people doing not to be popular but to help the person. We should all strive to improve in all aspects of life and saying I dont care that I cant spell is just lazy.

Arent we bored in the winter months.....

It amuses me greatly when I see criticism of spelling and grammar on forums……and not just this one. I wonder at times, do some people lead such shallow and petty lives that they can find, at times, so little else to contribute to fellow posters points than their spelling/grammar.

I moderate on a large UK based site and I KNOW that it puts people off posting when this sort of criticism happens. Recently a student asked for ideas for a project on a Motorhome site, only to be shot down for his grammar…….Not one single contribution regarding his question……So who lost out?

Why does it amuse me? As you may have noticed grammar and spelling are not one of my strong points. But, in a complicated and chequered career I have been widely published, have been a sub-editor and feature writer on more than a few UK national mags [and have a monthly article in a well known “Costa” mag]. Obviously kept a few proof readers in work!

I also managed to build and sell on two highly successful businesses, one of which was/is a well know UK/Euro “name”.

Doing well in business here even though I speak no more than a few words of Spanish…..but I am fluent in Arabic and Berber.

In short, can’t spell but have got a life……have you?

PS…….and have a strong south London accent!

Good for you detourer, but many of our members haven't got a life - you can spot them easily- the ones posting dozens of times every day on every conceivable topic, sometimes at 6am in the morning.
These people eventually get a feeling of superiority, as if others on the forum are actually wanting to hear their views, which is the direct opposite of their real life.
These people don't like to be corrected or told that they have got something wrong - they take it very personally, as if their standing in the community is being challenged in some way.

Prays the Lord for the spelling chequer
That came with our pea sea!
Mecca mistake and it puts you rite
Its so easy to ewes, you sea.

I never used to no, was it e before eye?
(Four sometimes its eye before e.)
But now I've discovered the quay to success
It's as simple as won, too, free!

Sew watt if you lose a letter or two,
The whirled won't come two an end!
Can't you sea? It's as plane as the knows on yore face
S. Chequer's my very best friend

I've always had trubble with letters that double
"Is it one or to S's?" I'd wine
But now, as I've tolled you this chequer is grate
And its hi thyme you got won, like mine.

Here is a link to the relevant thread if you want pages more of the above.

kevin77 you would be surprised to know what some can do in a day..:o :o especially when early rising... life ... I have been very fortunate but lack the feeling of superiority ..and I am thankful for that.. my fantastic wife gave me 5 fantastic kids who have given me 7 fantastic grand children (soon to be 8 and a bit longer 9) 1 great grandson (soon to be 2)... ... yes.. I have lived well and still do.

If my OH can have a bad day, pmt etc then I suppose I can also.

You just touched a nerve with something I have been ridiculed about all my life and I took the hump.

So It's nearly Christmas so let's Kiss and make up!

Be aware that it is not my spelling that's the problem it is my perception of what I have written. I can look a hundred times and not see my mistake but spot a mistake in others work. Strange but true.
It's not all negative as those that have dyslexia are normally compensated with fantastic natural gifts of creativity and imagination that 'normal' people can only dream of having. That why so many novelists and famous inventors are / were dyslexics.
Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated into the collective

As one of the main "offenders" in the earlier discussion re grammar & spelling, I just want to make a couple of comments: Firstly, I initially reacted at a posting made by someone in my disbelief at their saying they were a teacher, when by any measure the standard of their English was appalling for an educated person. It was not aimed AT the person, but as a comment about how low standards had got, coupled with the fact that we are here on the web, not in real life, so if I claim to be a retired nun, or a brain surgeon, who is to know any different, unless I am tested by questions about catechisms or some other religious claptrap, or which sector of the inner brain controls memory. I have noted that the teacher concerned is of a craft, or handicraft kind, rather than academic, but I still feel that he/she should be able to correct a pupil's work if they make a personalised plate with the message "Hoppy Burfday two Ewe"....unless it is with a picture of two female sheep celebrating! Marks & Spencer were recently forced to withdraw a large quantity of T-shirts with the slogan "My Little Penguin's" - a costly misuse of English by somebody, not picked up by all the folk who must have been involved in the manufacture and marketing chain!
In a more general way, I feel someone has to stand up and be counted in seeking to stop the erosion of the wonderful language we speak - simple keyboarding errors are unimportant, but the meaning should be clear - I am not singling out anyone, but there is a world of difference between a barmy evening and a balmy one - the former may be spent in Little Britain, the latter in the beauty of the Axarquia countryside, whereas it is difficult to imagine the reverse!
End of subject - I hope!
Right! I am off to the forum of the Apostrophe Protection Society!

If I need cheering up I re-read the post on 'Making brownies', the poster certainly takes all the good-natured replies in her stride, and the idea of a goat making brownies is hilarious. by just missing out a space while typing, the whole nature of the post was changed and that is what made it so funny

Very good, my friend! A well-researched response, for sure.
I will accept the existence of dyslexia as soon as they prove the reality of Attention Deficit Syndrome (a.k.a. incompetent parenting) and the existence of any form of god.

Perhaps an indication of the existance of Attention Deficit Syndrome [ADS] is right here......how does a forum thread move from bad spelling to ADS, Dyslexia and God ? And what an I doing at 2.30 writing this?

Dyslexia has, of course, little to do with bad spelling and/or grammar. I suspect that most of those named in my previous post used "Dyslexia" as an excuse, as I have done many times, for nothing more than.........you know what I mean

On the God bit.........Try......The seventeenth century the mathematician Blaise Pascal formulated his infamous pragmatic argument for belief in God in Pensées. The argument runs as follows:

If you erroneously believe in God, you lose nothing (assuming that death is the absolute end), whereas if you correctly believe in God, you gain everything (eternal bliss). But if you correctly disbelieve in God, you gain nothing (death ends all), whereas if you erroneously disbelieve in God, you lose everything (eternal damnation).

So we have what has been called "Pascal's Wager. How should you bet?

Regardless of any evidence for or against the existence of God, Pascal argued that failure to accept God's existence risks losing everything with no payoff on any count. The best bet, then, is to accept the existence of God. There have been several objections to the wager: that a person cannot simply will himself to believe something that is evidently false to him; that the wager would apply as much to belief in the wrong God as it would to disbelief in all gods, leaving the the believer in any particular god in the same situation as the atheist or agnostic; that God would not reward belief in him based solely on hedging one's bets; and so on.

Phew.......an attack of ADS............and so to bed :?

ADS, I'm with you guys, "bad parenting"

However, i would like to throw into the ring "M.E."
surely just a way of being lazy and having a medical excuse

personally i don't buy it at all and the more people tell me,

"oh my cousins got it, couldn't get out of bed last week"
the more i disbelieve it

only my opinion, but that's what counts (to me)

detourer - so through your research in Wikipedia and many hours of deep philosophical contemplation you have come up with the equivalent of "I had better believe in Father Christmas just in case he brings me a present", and "I wish the tooth fairy would take all these teeth and bring me the money so I can sleep more comfortably............"

If only I could come up with a semi-plausible theory, then create an industry of specialists, priests, authors, therapists, temple-builders, control freaks, hypocrites, gurus and pundits, all making money and misleading the naive and ignorant............but (sadly?) I could never be that cynical and dishonest!

The theory also ssumes that the God(dess) is some sort of heavenly accountant weighing belief as a criteria for redemption. A theory so laughable that were it true I think I would go for the oblivion option anyway.
