hello - first time on site - can anyone help and apologies if this is such an obvious question but....I've managed to confuse myself horribly on the question of car registration. We're moving out in autumn and have found a Spanish registered car to bring with us - what layers of bureacracy await me if I do this - is there a tax, what do I need to do about registration - look forward to hearing from you

Re: cars
Hi Avril
I was just thinking the same thing - we're looking at buying a lhd vehicle to bring out in May and I'm not sure if it would be better to bring out an English registered vehicle and transfer it to Spanish plates etc. when we're there, or see if we can buy or register the vehicle to Spain prior to departure, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Janice

I'm sure there will be more suggestions from other contributors but the most important thing is being able to register the vehicle in your name.
This will require the co-operation of the person who is registered as the current owner because his signature on the transfer document has to be validated by an authorised entity.
You will also need to ensure that there are no debts or fines outstanding on the vehicle because these will become yours along with the vehicle.
You will also need to produce the current receipt for the municipal circulation tax.
There are other implications of driving a Spanish registered vehicle before it is registered in your name including insurance and the existence of a current Spanish ITV (equivalent of UK MoT) certificate

We bought our LHD car in the Uk with english registration, you can check the vehicles for any debts (hpi) and drive away with peace of mind. We dod'nt want to buy a Spanish registered car in the Uk and find it had loads of bad history. We used a company called Oakleaf, very helpful guys with lots of stock
