Very sick hen - translation of drugs

Postby olive » Sun May 20, 2007 5:56 pm

One of my hens has a fungal infection which we would have treated in the UK with Baytril and Nystatin (not at the same time). We're managing to get some yoghurt into her until we can get to the vet or agristore tomorrow, but does anyone know the Spanish names of these drugs, or even a Spanish equivalent?

(She's stopped eating and her crop is full of brown liquid, but no lumps and no smell so I'm confident it's not sour crop. It's easy to purge the liquid but she's getting weaker all the time).

The farmacia would probably know if you go to the 24 hour one.

Take a look at:
http://www.consultavet.es/consulta/prod ... hp3?id=719
You can buy it at the farmacia.

Nystatin is a type of Canistan used for thrush (no chicken pun intended).

The generic name for Baytril is Enrofloxacin. Nystatin I believe is the generic name, this link might give you enough information to give to the farmacia.

its a hen, wringing its neck is cheaper .. go and buy a new one.

i'm sorry but i cant see why you would keep this animal and treat its infection, when u could get a new one easier and cheaper.

sorry to hear about your hen. I have had two deaths in the last 6 months and apart from seeing a parasite in the first one, was never sure what the problem was. Because they are layers i am very wary of using drugs , but have used avisan although think this is an antibiotic. No use in above cases anyway. You could speak to the vet in your area used by the town hall/although adament there was NO avian flu, when there was an alert he had the responsibility for checking possible cases, so has slightly more interest in investigating. Looking at other chicken sites on the web, someone ill be bound to know. Have you done the adding of cider vinegar, garlic etc which seems to be used as a natural remedy for quite a lot of hen problems? The pharmacy nearest to your local feed supplier may well have an answer.. We are in Granada province -nice to hear of another hen fancier! Hope you find something suitable very soon.

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

The hen is on the mend. The nearest Agricultural supplies place was a great help and the medication wasn't as pricey as getting the same stuff mail order. Almost certainly a fungal infection. If you ever have the same problem feed the hen natural live yoghurt to help fight the harmful bacteria in the crop etc.

Spanish Lad. You have lived here too long! Our Spanish neighbours took one look and said "wring its neck and buy another one" . Problem with that is I feel a certain responsibility to animals in my care even if they are ultimately going to be eaten. There is a middle road.

fair play olive, i can see where you are coming from, i guess i have been here too long, i'm taking more of a "spanish stance" about things like that. i wonder if i'd feel the same way if it was my pet dog ?? hmm.. you've got me thinking now i guess i wouldn't.

glad u got it treated in the end, despite some "none-helpful" replies :)
