Help needed for typing in Spanish with accents etc

Postby Jane » Tue Nov 27, 2007 9:39 pm

Please can anyone advise me how to type accents when writing Spanish on an English keyboard? Accents over the o, e etc? I need to do this in Word and also in emails themselves.

With Number Lock on, hold down the Alt key and type in the relevant numbers as below:-

á - Alt + 0225

é - Alt + 0233

í - Alt + 0237

ó - Alt + 0243

ú - Alt + 0250

ñ - Alt + 0241

¿ - Alt + 0191

¡ - Alt + 0161

A simpler way, for the áéíóú is to hold down the Alt Gr key and type the letter.

Thanks Alan and Megan. The Alt Gr system seems to work fine but I cannot get any joy with what you have suggested Megan. Tried pressing Num Lock etc but nothing is being typed at all. I wonder if keyboards vary? Any other suggestions?
Would be nice to be able to put that little wiggle over the n and do those upside down question marks.

Sorry, Jane, I only know that it works fine for me using the numbers on the numeric keypad to the right of the keyboard. My OS is Windows XP.

Alan, didn't know about the Alt Gr key - thanks :)

Yes it works Megan. Thanks. Initially I was using the number keys spread across the top of the keyboard instead of those on the right hand side. Got the little squiggle: and to prove it here's mañana!
I can now do my Spanish homework and it least it will look authentic when I send it in, even if it's not all correct....

You can always use the "insert" menu, select "symbol", and find the character you want from there. But the Alt Gr method is great - I always wondered what that key was for! Thanks.
Don't worry about what people think, they don't do it very often
