This is a credential provided by the regional government for towns to certify that their festivals and other events are worthy of a tourist’s visit. The official name in Spanish for this credential is Declaración de Interés Turístico National de Andalucia. But, what does this actually certify?

Looking at the official government decree that regulates this “declaration”, it actually means that the festival or event is a true representation of Andalucian culture and that it is interesting to tourists because of it’s historical, anthropological, culinary or other type of cultural value.

It is extremely interesting to municipal authorities to obtain this official stamp of approval because it allows them to use the credential for publicity purposes and also might help them to get special government subsidies. However, it does require that they then take special care to maintain the event’s historical and traditional nature.

In addition to “fiestas” the government also gives this credential to itineraries and even promotional material, like books and documentaries.
