CUDECA
The Costa del Sol Cancer Care association was founded
in 1991 by it's President, Joan Hunt, encouraged by bilingual
Spanish
Dr. Marisa Martin Rosello, who worked in the only palliative care
unit at Malaga's Red Cross Hospital and who now heads the medical
team. Since then CUDECA has grown into a fully-fledged association
with a medical team of more than 50 administrative volunteers
and
professionals who are now is installed in its Centre in Arroyo
de la Miel. Early in 1996 CUDECA was given the land by the Benalmadena
council for the construction of a Hospice facility, the cost
of
building and equipping it is approximately 400 million pesetas.
The final construction is almost complete on the 12 bed in patient
wing.
Whether patients are to be treated at home or in the hospice, their
objective is always the same - "to provide
the highest possible quality of life and a dignified death".
At the beginning of 2001 CUDECA was granted Foundation
status ensuring greater security in financial matters and the appointment
of a board of distinguished members of the medical legal and commercial
professions to serve as trustees, ensuring the highest professional
management of the Hospice
The CUDECA Medical team attends between 40 plus
at any one time along the coast from Sotogrande to Nerja and inland,
as well as supporting their families and carers. This service is
entirely financed by the CUDECA Benefit shops along the coast from
Estepona to Torre del Mar run exclusively by 300 plus volunteers.
