Fernan Nuñez - History

HISTORY

The Romans built a settlement near here Ulia.

During the Muslim period, the area belonged to the Cordovan Cora. The area was re-conquered by King Fernando III in 1240. In this battle Captain Fernán Núñez de Témez seized one of the Muslim defensive towers, called Aben Hana.

The first Christian settlement was situated around the tower of AbenCález, in the vicinity of the current Ermita del Calvario, however, the area did not offer enough protection against the sporadic Muslim incursions. In 1385, Diego Gutiérrez de los Ríos and García de Aguayo, obtained the permission to move the parish to a safer place, under the shelter of the newly built Castle.

The House of Fernán Núñez participated actively in the Granada War, supporting the Catholics Monarchs concluding with the siege and Battle of Granada in 1491. This signalled the end of Islamic power on the Iberian Peninsula.

In 1662, Don Francisco Gutiérrez de los Ríos was the initiator of a series of social policies very beneficial for the town.

During the Spanish Civil War, Fernán Núñez despite determined resistance fell quickly into the hands of the nationalists. As in the rest of Andalusia, during Franco’s dictatorship, Fernán Núñez experienced a strong emigration, with many travelling to Catalonia, Madrid, the Basque Country, Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg.
