Music and Dance Festivals in Andalucia

There are usually hundreds of music and dance festivals taking place in Andalucia every year, especially in the summer. Following widespread cancellations in 2020 and 2021. 2022 is a big year, organisers are notably publishing festival dates earlier this year and people are so ready to party!

The festivals cover every genre from rock, pop, indie, folk, blues and jazz to classical and flamenco. Some of these, mostly those offering jazz, classical or flamenco, are well-established and have been taking place for many years, while others - generally pop and dance music - are relatively new.

On this page we give an overview of the more important and established festivals or series of concerts which are likely to be held every year around the same dates. In addition to the list below, there many one-off concerts and summer series concerts taking place and promoted in all but the smallest towns and villages; too many to list.

We also list the most well-known Flamenco Festivals and the traditional summer ferias

We update this page with future dates and more info on a weekly basis.

Interestelar has 'de facto' taken over from Territorios which was an international music festival held every year since 1998 in the grounds of the Monasterio de la Cartuja third weekend in May. It attracted big international names, such as Fatboy Slim, Tricky and Basement Jaxx. Territorios was attended by 32,000 in 2015. Sadly the 2016 edition was cancelled shortly before the event, with the organisers citing economic reasons and lack of institutional support.

Alhama Festival de Música, Alhama de Granada - 5th to 6th August 2022
The Alhama Music Festival celebrated its 50st edition in 2015. Founded in 1966 as a local singing competition in Alhama de Granada, it was orginally part of the traditional feria, and was called ‘Festival Regional de la Canción de Alhama de Granada'. Over the following years the festival grew in importance and attracted singers from all over Andalucia. In the late 1970s it had a more radical feel, with the campaign for democracy and Andalucia being declared an autonomous community. In the 1980s protest gave way to commercialization, although the festival's title until 2011 was ‘Festival de Musica Joven de Andalucia' (Andalucia Young Music Festival). This was perhaps Andalucia's first contemporary music festival. Renowned national artists headline these days, such as Kiko Veneno. There are two distinct categories: ‘Rock and Pop' and ‘Flamenco Fusion'. The festival is strongly supported by local administration and the competition is still at its heart. In 2017 the first night  competition bands were Derty Dayana, The One and the Other, The Mama Llama, Lucius Blue, Gsus López y Rafa Ortega and on the second night the invitees were Celtas Cortos, Sonido Vegetal, Enseco (winners of 2015), closing with Balkan Fuzion Party: Dj Matt Bombinoff and circus Balkanico. The festival takes place on two stages in Patio del Carmen and Paseo del Cisne on the first Friday and Saturday in August. Tickets are free. In 2019 dates were 2nd and 3rd August. 2020 was cancelled. In 2021 a winter festival called Salama and took place 3rd and 4th December in Cintruenigo (Navarra) tickets 25€. 2022 dates are 5th and 6th August 2022.

The traditional definition of a festival is "a special day or period, usually in memory of a religious event, with its own social activities, food, or ceremonies" and a more contemporary definition of a festival is "an organised set of special events, such as musical performances". Thus if the concerts or events are spread over non-consecutive dates without any complimentary or unifying activities, it not correct to name them a festival. In the listing above, whilst we retain the official name in the titles, we have added parethenses around the word festival where we belive it to be a misnoma.
