Iglesia de la Magdalena

Iglesia de la Magdalena

The church is a temple of great architectural interest situated on the grounds of an Islamic mosque, the entire current church dates back to the first quarter of the sixteenth century, in the style known as, Flamboyant Gothic. Its origin as a Muslim mosque is attested by the attached courtyard, formed by a central pond surrounded by arches, some of them horseshoe-shaped. Its interior is divided into four naves by unaligned rectangular pillars that support Gothic arches made of exposed brick. The roof is Gothic, with ribbed and star vaults. The presbytery or main altar is a simple chapel with a flat head, which appears presided over by the processional images of the Santísimo Cristo de la Clemencia and Santa María Magdalena. At the end of the façade stands the tower, which in former times was a minaret of Muslim origin. At present it appears topped by an octagonal body from the sixteenth century, the work of Andrés de Vandelvira.

Located in Plaza la Magdalena.
