Palacio de la Diputación

Palacio de la Diputación

The Palacio de la Diputación building is considered the main work of civil architecture in the city and was built in 1891. Today was not the first time that the Diputación (provincial government) occupied this site.

The first building that housed Diputación was the Convent of San Francisco, built in 1246 by Fernando III el Santo as a palace with a chapel, and later donated in 1354 by King Pedro I el Cruel to the Franciscan Friars. Some years later, the poor condition of the building led the Diputación to move to other sites in the city, although always with the aim to return to this central square.

In mid-1867, and by now a ruin, the old convent was demolished and after almost thirty years of construction, the current Provincial Palace was built. The architect of the current building project was Jorge Porrua y Moreno. The front of the main façade was designed in the neoclassical style but renovated in neo-baroque, the preferred of the architect Justino Flores de Llamas.
