History - Arroyo del Ojanco

The word “ojanco” refers to a person with only one eye, resembling something similar to the description of a Cyclops (the most famous of them was Polyphemus) and jáncano or ojáncano, of which these mythological beings are known in northern Spain, specifically in the Cantabrian mountains. Also in embryology, a science dedicated to studying human embryos and foetuses, it is known as a foetal monster with atrophy of the nasal septum and one eye. Professor Reverté Coma, a world authority in forensic medicine, had one in his laboratory, born in a town in Castilla in the 1930s of the last century, it died a few hours after being born.

History - Hornos

The site that Hornos occupies today was populated in the third millennium BC, in the period corresponding to the Copper Age, and remained occupied during the Bronze Age, second millennium BC. A cemetery excavated in an artificial cave was found in Hornos, dated to around 4800 years BC.

Arroyo del Ojanco

Arroyo del Ojanco belonged to the municipality of Beas de Segura until 2001 when the segregationist movements that began in 1950 bore fruit. It is situated within the Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Natural Park in mountainous terrain bathed by the Guadalmena and Guadalimar rivers, and the stream that gives it its name. It has about 2500 inhabitants.

Beas de Segura

Beas de Segura is situated within the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Natural Park, designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. The name comes from the Latin term “Veha”, which means path or way. It was given this name due to the settlement being at the crossroads of three Roman roads that went to the mountains, the east and the county. It has about 5500 inhabitants.

Benatae

Benatae is one of the towns within the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Natural Park. It is an ideal destination for those looking to get away from the stress and noise of the cities to enjoy rural tourism. It has about 500 inhabitants.

Génave

Génave is host to some beautiful views, especially from the Zarracotín watchtower. The town is a pioneer in Spain in the production of organic olive oil, known by the “Oro de Génave” brand. In addition, its extra virgin olive oil has the Sierra de Segura denomination of origin. It has about 600 inhabitants.

La Puerta de Segura

La Puerta de Segura is a natural entrance to the Sierra de Segura, along the Guadalimar River, with a promenade and a unique river beach. It has about 2300 inhabitants.

Orcera

Orcera is situated within the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Natural Park, allowing visitors to enjoy beautiful and interesting places such as Armujo, with a huge river pool, or Estrechos, Navalcaballo, Valdemarín, Linarejos and La Huerta. It has about 1800 inhabitants.

Puente de Génave

Puente de Génave is the name given to a bridge built by the Romans linking the Guadalquivir Valley with Cartagena. It stands out for the excellent workmanship of its ashlar masonry and shows the technology developed in Spain during that century. The town has about 2200 inhabitants.

Santiago-Pontones

Santiago-Pontones is made up of two population centres that were once independent towns; Santiago de la Espada and Pontones. Both are situated within the Sierra de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas Natural Park, a fact that explains the interest that this municipality holds for those who enjoy rural tourism. It has about 2800 inhabitants.

Villarrodrigo

Villarrodrigo is home to the well-known bullfighting cattle ranch of Samuel Flores. Furthermore, in the area of Las Higuericas, rock inscriptions have been found that have been identified with a Roman necropolis. It has about 400 inhabitants.
