Nuestra Señora de la Paz Church

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Paz

Built in 1580, the church contains several valuable and ancient images inside, including one of the Immaculate Conception attributed to the school of Alonso Cano. Although it is known as the Iglesia de San Marcos and this is written on the façade, it was originally named the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Paz. Designed by Ambrosio de Vico in 1615, it was completed in 1617. The traditional latericia and Tuscan order doorway features an entablature and pilasters that frame a semicircular arch with a corbel at the keystone. The exterior is entirely whitewashed, with brick rafters, bands, and masonry boxes adorning the walls. Inside, it has a rectangular nave covered with a half-barrel vault with transverse arches starting from a moulded cornice with cut-out plates. The main altarpiece is a gilded Baroque piece containing images of the Immaculate Conception, attributed to Alonso Cano, as well as smaller carved and polychrome images of San José and San Blas. In the presbytery, there is another carved, gilded altarpiece housing the Virgen del Rosario. The third altarpiece features Jesús Nazareno. The tower consists of a prismatic body with a square plan, three pilaster bodies and windows with mouldings, topped by a sharp slate spire on an octagonal body. It is located in Plaza de la Constitución.
