Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles

Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles

The church was built in the basilica style with three naves, constructed of ashlar masonry, resting on cruciform pillars separated by semicircular arches that run the length of the church. It is of austere Renaissance style, except for the so-called, Puerta del Sol and Puerta de la Lonja and was built with two different types of stone: the northern section is made of tufa stone, abundant in Castril, while the southern section is built with a softer stone, sandstone. This results in a significant difference in its state of preservation between the two areas. The original roof was a Mudéjar-style coffered ceiling that was destroyed by fire set by the invading French troops after the desecration and looting of the church on June 26, 1810. Signs of the devastating fire can still be seen today in the blackened ashlars of the south façade. The subsequent restoration sought to integrate what could be preserved from the original structure into the new one, although the exterior still reveals elements belonging to each. Most of the liturgical vestments and statues perished on that tragic day. And no sooner had the church recovered from such misfortune than, in March 1853, it suffered a robbery in which several valuable objects disappeared, never to be recovered. Another fire, in 1859, caused further losses, though of lesser magnitude. Located on Cale Rio.
