Ermita de San Isidro

Ermita de San Isidro

This newly built chapel, like the rest of the town, dates back to the nineteenth century due to the Lisbon earthquake of 25 December 1884. It is located on the outskirts of the town, on the road from Arenas del Rey to Granada. Access is gained through a small, enclosed courtyard reached by a few steps. The chapel has a rectangular floor plan with a single nave defined by load-bearing walls. The roof structure is concealed by a false ceiling and is therefore not visible from the interior. A small altar at the back of the room houses the devotional image of San Isidro. Outside, the simple facade, crowned by a bell gable, is striking.

In 1973, the municipalities of Fornes and Játar merged with Arenas del Rey. On 19 February 2015, Játar seceded from Arenas del Rey with the unanimous approval of the Arenas del Rey Town Hall. This was finalised with the approval of the Granada Provincial Council and the regional government on the same day. On 2 October 2018, Fornes also seceded.
