Town Hall - Bailén

Town Hall - Bailén

The central square, Plaza de la Constitución, was so named in 1933, the same year that the Town Hall was transferred to its current premises. The building formerly housed the Civil Guard Barracks, which were moved to the rear of the building to accommodate the Municipal offices. These reforms were carried out by the architect Don Alberto López de Asiaín. The Barracks were finally moved in 1994. It is worth contemplating the façade of this building, where the Bailén coat of arms stands out along with the clock and the turret built to house it. Today, this is an electronic chronograph, acquired in 1982. When entering the interior of the Town Hall, specifically the Sala Capitular, there is a copy of the original portrait of General Castaños, by the Valencian painter Vicente López Portaña; Chamber Painter of Fernando VII when he succeeded Goya, and who knew how to capture the feat of the first Duke of Bailén through a calm face brimming with experience. The reproduction of the same was commissioned by the Mayor, José Morillo Cárdenas, for the Duke of Bailén, José María Cavero de Carondelet Goicoerrotea in 1927. A year later, coinciding with the commemorative acts of the Battle of Bailén, the President of the National Assembly, José de Yanguas Messía, delivered the canvas made by José Nogué y Massó.
