POSADA DEL COJO
The Posada or Mesón del Cojo was a popular stopping point for travellers heading to Cádiar, including Aben Jaguar, the uncle of Aben Humeya and self-proclaimed King of Granada, also known as "the Kinglet". According to some chroniclers, important events in the history of the Alpujarra, such as the coronation of Aben Humeya, were finalised in this inn during Christmas 1568. Later, the Posada del Cojo provided accommodation for Don Juan of Austria, who, according to tradition, pursued the innkeeper’s daughter for an affair. However, he had to flee across the terraces to escape her wrath. At the end of the 18th century, the Mesón del Cojo was used by merchants travelling from different Spanish regions to trade in Cádiar, where a significant market was held. This building's prestige is also documented in the early twentieth century when it hosted renowned intellectuals such as the Bloomsbury Group, who came to the Alpujarra village of Yegen on the invitation of the famous Gerald Brenan (known as Don Gerardo), author of the book Al Sur de Granada. It is located on Calle Real.
