Malaga Port Skyscraper
This is a long-running project that started in 2002 and gained momentum in 2016 following publication in the BOE. The plan is to build a 35-storey skyscraper port hotel on the outer breakwater of the port near the lighthouse. The project is promoted by Al Alfia and supported by the Málaga Port Authority. Initially, Frank Gehry, famous for his work on the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, was consulted. Later, José Seguí designed a 136-metre-tall, 39-storey circular tower, which was later reduced to 116 metres. The supportive city council needed to modify their urban plan to incorporate the tower, and this was approved in November 2023. The developer then changed architects, appointing David Chipperfield, and submitted his outline design to the Port Authority in March 2025. The next approval step is the National Port Authority, followed by the Council of Ministers for final approval. However, this process has faced legal challenges from the San Telmo Academy of Fine Arts and the 'Let's Defend Our Horizon' group, which must be resolved first. David Chipperfield's outline project differs in that it is a rectangular parallelepiped shape at the base, which will grow and change. The height will increase to 144 metres, and the estimated investment is 200 million euros. The Alfia Hotel Group, backed by the Qatari investment fund, are the promoters under the company Andalusian Hospitality II. The Hesperia Hotel Group, led by CEO Jordi Ferrer, also has a stake and is likely to manage the hotel.
