Alcalá de los Gazules

Los Alcornocales Natural Park

This vast park covers 167,767ha from Tarifa in the south to the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park in the north. It is named after its handsome and beautifully kept cork tree grove, the largest in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the most important ones in the world.

Alcalá de los Gazules

Alcalá de los Gazules is a spectacularly located historic hilltop pueblo blanco (white town) with stunning architecture. The town is situated in the middle of Cadiz province on the A-381 road from Los Barrios to Jerez. This road is often called "La Ruta del Toro" (Route of the Bull) for the bull-breeding ranches in the vicinity. With a population of about 6,000, Alcala is worth the short detour for a visit.

Alcalá de los Gazules - Vulture Culture

From my house I could hear shouting coming from the Calle Real.  As a seven-year-old I could not resist going to find out what was causing such an uproar.  I shot off like an arrow, and went to the corner of Calle Real and Rio Verde, where my friend Manolo's father had his tannery.  I was sure that Manolo would be waiting for me there.  We were the same age and knew each other inside out.

Cadiz Province - Alcalá de los Gazules

Alcalá has around 5,600 inhabitants and at least 33 food shops, including five butchers, three greengrocers, two fishmongers and six confectioners/bakers. There may be more, lurking in backstreets I haven't ventured into yet. This works out at 5.5 food shops per 1000 people; in the UK, the ratio is 1.6 per 1000 people (Euromonitor.com). Then we have four bazaars, three ironmongers, two saddlers, two chemists, three shoeshops, half a dozen clothes shops, two gunsmiths and an amazing agricultural emporium which sells everything from flea powder to live partridges.
